Movie studios often pull the plug on projects such as animated movies. One such film, Fixed by Genndy Tartakovsky, has fallen victim to this fate. Tartakovsky is the talented artist behind many beloved Cartoon Network shows. His works include Dexter’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack, Star Wars: Clone Wars, and Sym-Bionic Titan. For one reason or another, Warner Bros. has chosen to set his new movie aside.
The Muzzled Genndy Tartakovsky Film
Fixed follows the story of a bloodhound named Bull, who learns of his eventual neutering. He then gives his “coin purse” one last big hurrah. This decision leads him and his friends to have a 24-hour bucket list-styled adventure. Produced by Sony Pictures Animation, it would be the studio’s first R-rated film. Its rating is due to strong crude content and language, drug use, and violence. Despite this, Genndy Tartakovsky stated it does not center around gross-out humor.
Tartakovsky initially envisioned the film to be hand-drawn but changed it to 3D. He would go back to 2D animation for “artistic” reasons. Tartakovsky even chose to follow the example of Disney’s Lady and the Tramp. None of the animals in the film would perform human gestures. Tartakovsky made the animation reminiscent of Tex Avery and Chuck Jones. Their works include Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes, respectively. The cast of Fixed includes Adam Devine as Bull, Idris Elba, Kathryn Hahn, and Bobby Moynihan.
Putting a Leash on This Pup
On August 9, Warner Bros. announced that it dropped Fixed. The news was surprising, considering it was green-lit years before. The precise reason for canceling the film’s release is still unclear. Their decision could be due to Warner’s Discovery stock losing 10 billion dollars in value. It could also be due to the declining value of its television operations. The cancellation might be a desperate effort to recoup some lost revenue.
However, there is still a glimmer of hope for this animated feature. Warner Bros. returned the movie rights for Fixed to Sony Pictures Animation. Since then, they have been searching for a new studio to distribute the movie. Netflix was considered due to its prior collaborations with Sony, though negotiations have been unsuccessful. If Fixed is not selected, then it could end up like other discarded Warner Bros. animated films. Such dropped movies include Batgirl, Coyote vs Acme, and Scoob! Holiday Haunt.
A Loss for Warner Bros.
The studio’s decision to drop Fixed could be a financial disaster. If Warner Bros. cannot profit from the movie, it probably can’t other films. The feature was a cost-savvy, low-risk production, meaning the studio would recoup easier from it. Also, Genndy Tartakovsky is considered a highly bankable director thanks to his Hotel Transylvania series. Fixed probably would have made Warner Bros. a lot of money at the box office. Nevertheless, only time will tell if Tartakovsky and his film get a second chance.
