OOOOooooh! Regular Show, the iconic comedy series from Cartoon Network, will return. During its heyday, this animated comedy cartoon was a significant pillar of the channel’s lineup and inspired many other creatives that came afterward. To this day, longtime viewers herald Regular Show as one of CN’s best.
While there hasn’t been much revealed about this reboot or how long fans will have to wait, there are some essential pieces readers do know already. Here is a rundown of everything viewers should know about the upcoming reboot.

According to ComicBook, the classic Cartoon Network series Regular Show has a sequel series in the works. The announcement came during announcements regarding the new series from Warner Bros. Discovery’s lineup. While this is certainly exciting news, virtually no details were provided other than that the original creator, J.G. Quintel, would return to oversee the series.
Immediately, fans began speculating what this reboot would entail and whether or not it would be a direct continuation or a simple spinoff. This news came alongside the reveal that its sister series, Adventure Time, would receive an upcoming movie and multiple spinoffs. As such, this made it very clear that Cartoon Network‘s mascots were making another comeback.
Regular Show: A Cartoon Classic
Regular Show was a 2010 cartoon created by veteran animator J.G. Quintel for Cartoon Network. The series followed the Blue Jay Mordecai and trash panda Rigby as they worked as park groundskeepers. Infamously, their tasks would start as simple chores before quickly escalating into cosmic, life-or-death battles every episode. The series was a foil to the monumentally popular Adventure Time, which had a zany exterior and setup before delving into more philosophical episodes later.
Anyone from Gen Z can probably trace their taste in humor back to Regular Show. Virtually every central character had some catchphrase or running gag that became a meme in one way or another, to say nothing of the gag characters introduced every week. One of the best examples of a successor would be MAX’s Smiling Friends, about a similar duo of straight men in a chaotic, cynical world. The show’s alumni would also continue, such as with Infinity Train creator Owen Dennis.
Continuing the Legacy
In 2017, Regular Show ended after eight seasons. Without getting into spoilers, the finale made it clear that the leading group’s adventures would end, with an epilogue confirming their lives would move on. At worst, a retcon may be needed to shoehorn in a continuation of the main cast should return. Even if the cast’s fate is already known, seeing one last journey with them couldn’t hurt.
In 2021, J.G. Quintel released Close Enough for MAX. It was an adult, spiritual successor to the original cartoon, which had the same style and art set in the same universe. However, this time, it focused on human characters of the same age as those who grew up watching the Regular Show. Through this successor, the passion for Quintel’s work survived into the 2020s.
Fans might be wary because Cartoon Network reboots have usually been hit or miss. Some, such as 2016’s Ben 10 or Powerpuff Girls, were outright despised by original fans. However, others, such as Teen Titans Go, managed to outlast even the DC Extended Universe in terms of success. Of course, with the original creator overseeing the title, it will be in good hands. All eight seasons of Regular Show will be found on MAX.
