Hideaki Anno, the creator of the world-renowned anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, was recently hospitalized due to a gruesome leg injury. It was announced last week that Anno would cancel his August events while recovering and rehabbing. But it could be a while before we see him again as a guest appearance due to the severity of the injury.
At the age of 64, it is still not publicly known how Anno suffered a brutal compound fracture to his left leg. The famous Japanese animator, scriptwriter, and filmmaker made a mark on the anime industry almost 30 years ago with the 1995 franchise that is still discussed today. Other anime series and Japanese movies Anno is known for include 1997’s End of Evangelion, 2016’s Shin Godzilla, 2022’s Shin Ultraman, 2023’s Shin Kamen Rider, and the four Rebuild films for his hit anime series.

According to Khara, a Japanese animation studio, they posted the announcement of Anno and his status post-injury. The iconic director is the president of Studio Khara, which was founded by Anno himself in 2006. He left Studio Gainax due to pay discrepancies and corrupt management.
In 2016, Khara sued Gainax for unpaid royalties, which led to the bankruptcy of Studio Gainax just two months ago. Now, Anno will be out of commission for a while, potentially for a few months, until he recovers fully from his treatment.
The major studio for the Rebuild of Evangelion movie’s most recent work is Kaiju No.8 and their kaiju designs throughout the anime series. They have also done live-action films like the ones mentioned previously and video games like 2017’s Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia, along with 2019’s Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown.
Hideaki Anno Cancels Upcoming Events in August
Anno was set to be on the “Special Talk: Yoshikazu Yasuhiko x Hideaki Anno” event on August 11th in Hyogo Prefecture with Yoshikazu Yasuhiko that is now canceled. He is a fellow Japanese animator, director, and manga artist for the Mobile Suit Gundam anime that has mecha ties with Anno’s anime.
The director of Evangelion was also supposed to be on a talk show after a screening of Epoch of Murder Madness on August 12. Released in 1967, the film inspired Anno and was directed by Kihachi Okamoto, celebrating his 100th anniversary. Okamoto passed away in 2005 and was born in 1924.
This screening is still taking place in Japan from August 1-21 but without Anno’s guest appearance after the movie. He was also set to talk with Yutaka Izubuchi, a well-known animation director and mechanical designer. This is unfortunate, as singer Yoko Takahashi had to cancel her concert last month due to AI concerns. She sang the legendary opening for the anime series Evangelion.
The Cause of Compound Fracture Still Unclear
The National Health Service details a compound fracture as a “complicated break where the bone has broken through the skin, or the initial injury has exposed the broken bone.” That is worrisome for Anno, as information about how he broke his left leg has not been revealed to the public.
In an interview back in May of this year with the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, Anno mentioned that he might be ready to pass the torch on to someone else. He said he won’t be a part of future Evangelion content, as it concluded with the Thrice Upon a Time movie that came out in 2021.
So far, it isn’t something set in stone, but future anime could still be a possibility even without Anno as the main director. However, a sequel for the two-plus decade-old anime or even another film may be overdoing it for the franchise without its creator.
