Dragon Ball Daima is a new anime in the Dragon Ball franchise that will be coming out in October. This new anime is not a first for the series. The Dragon Ball franchise is well-known and incredibly popular. Many content creators, artists, and celebrities constantly reference and point to Dragon Ball as being a major inspiration for their work. The series started back in the 1980s as a humble manga in the pages of Weekly Shonen Jump.
In the time since, Dragon Ball has exploded in popularity. Not just in the anime community, but also in the mainstream. Many people in all kinds of cultures and communities can recognize the iconic character designs from the series. The last time the series got an anime was with Dragon Ball Super which started back in the mid 2010s. Now, Dragon Ball Daima is a brand new series for fans to enjoy.
Toriyama’s Involvement in Dragon Ball Daima
Akira Toriyama is the creator and father of the Dragon Ball series. Unfortunately, earlier this year, he tragically passed away. This was a brutal blow to many in the anime and manga community. Without Toriyama’s work, many series we love that have been inspired by Dragon Ball would not have been created. Toriyama was apparently deeply involved in many parts of Dragon Ball Daima’s development as well.
Dragon Ball Daima was originally supposed to be an anime-only affair. Toriyama didn’t have any plans to be too directly involved. But as Dragon Ball Daima’s production went on, he became increasingly more and more involved in the show’s overall creation. Many fans were worried about this involvement. Now that he’s passed, is the show completely done? Will it be canceled or majorly changed?
Daima’s Premise
Of course, the series is still going on, thankfully so. While Toriyama’s passing was tragic, it did not end up canceling the series. The series is still on track to release in October of this very year. Now, with all that being said, what is it about? Dragon Ball Daima has a very interesting premise that might sound very familiar to fans of the series. Goku, along with the rest of the cast, have all been shrunken down to kid-size.
Hold your horses, I know. Any fan of the series is well aware of Dragon Ball GT. Dragon Ball GT was an anime-only continuation of the series that had a mixed reception. Many fans absolutely despised it for its questionable way of continuing the story after the end of Z. In GT, Goku gets turned into a child by a group of villains, and the rest of the series is molded around this premise.
A Celebration of the Series 40th Anniversary
According to many sources, chiefly Toriyama among them, Dragon Ball Daima has a different premise. While Dragon Ball GT felt like a way to cash in on the success and popularity of the anime, Dragon Ball Daima feels more passionate. Any fan can tell this by just looking at the animation. The use of colors, and stylistic aesthetic really feel unique and cool for the series. The animation style is reminiscent of the Super Broly movie, which many fans loved.
It has also been said that Dragon Ball Daima won’t solely focus on action. In the original Dragon Ball, there was action, but there was also a lot of comedy and adventure. Dragon Ball Z focused on a lot of action, but Dragon Ball Daima seems to be changing that up a bit. It feels like this series is just a celebration of Dragon Ball’s tenure as an anime power icon, and I couldn’t be more excited to see how it will turn out come October!
