Castlevania Nocturne is the next chapter in Netflix’s animated series. Based on the long-running Castlevania video game series, Nocturne follows the tale of protagonist Richter Belmont. The original Castlevania is a rare beast: one of few game adaptations to present a quality experience. Its emphasis on unrelentingly graphic horror and nuanced characters makes it stand out. Castlevania Nocturne is a spinoff sequel to the original featuring a fresh setting and cast of characters.
Castlevania Nocturne: Richter’s New Look
In an interview with IGN, the team behind Nocturne discussed various changes to Richter’s character design. While Belmont’s newest iteration differs from the original design, some came straight from the games. They also made the point to emphasize that they weren’t just ripping off elements from the games.
They also pointed out that the character’s design had invoked the character’s spirit. Richter’s design combines the versions of him from the Dracula X remake and the original PC design. There is also some lesser influence from a Castlevania Pachinko game and another from Smash Bros.
Continuing the Belmont Story
Unlike the prior Castlevania series, set in 1470s Wallachia, the new story has migrated to 1700s France. It follows Richter Belmont, a direct descendant of Trevor and Sypha Belmont from the preceding series. Rather than regurgitating the typical Belmont on Dracula action, Castlevania Nocturne takes a different approach. The story sets Richter against a new antagonist named Erzsebet Báthory, the so-called Vampire Messiah. Setting the story in the future also removes the need to worry about existing storylines.
Castlevania’s four seasons adapt Castlevania 3, at least in its tone and spirit, although not the plot. That freedom works to their advantage, giving an opening to expand on lore, characterization, and worldbuilding. Castlevania: Nocturne gives the lore of the Castlevania universe right from the start. Nocturne and the Castlevania game Rondo of Blood occur within the same year. However, Castlevania Nocturne alters this setting to have a French Revolution backstory for their latest vampire tale. This allows Castlevania: Nocturne to continue using a new setting.
Final Thoughts
Castlevania Nocturne is the sequel spinoff to Netflix’s previous animated series based on the famous, long-running video game series. Belmont’s design is not identical to any past games, but it does take inspiration from them. The design also borrows elements from a Castlevania Pachinko game and a Super Smash Bros crossover character. The creative team has migrated the setting from Wallachia to France to create room to breathe. In addition, the setting has been moved several hundred years into the future.
Furthermore, the conventional antagonist for the plot has been changed this time. Rather than the conventional Belmont v. Dracula, Richter faces off against the “Vampire Messiah,” Erzsebet Báthory. Castlevania Nocturne is somewhat inspired by the game Rondo of Blood. With it renewed for season 2 and multiple lore tidbits reimagined, the sky’s the limit. There are certainly plenty of games to reimagine and put a spin on for future seasons.
