Buddy Daddies: The Wholesome Awe-Inspiring Hitman Comedy
When an anime wins an award, it catches the eye of long-time fans. Buddy Daddies won an award for Best Original Anime at the 2024 Crunchyroll Awards, and it’s not hard to see why. Buddy Daddies
The name is kind of silly, but so is the anime. In it, we follow two men, Kazuki and Rei, who are assassins. They are friends from the show’s beginning, but given Rei’s closed-off nature, it doesn’t seem they’re necessarily best friends. While working, Kazuki and Rei encounter a little girl looking for her father. The father in question just happens to be the man our protagonists have been hired to kill. Kazuki and Rei complete their mission, killing the father and leaving them with a dilemma. The little girl, Miri, was alone. Her mother was nowhere to be found, and she continued telling the men that her mother sent her to see her “papa.”
At first, they could not find or contact Miri’s mother, so they decided to take care of her until they could. Eventually, once they track down the woman, they quickly discover she didn’t send Miri to her father as much as she got rid of her. The woman wanted nothing to do with her, carelessly inviting Kazuki and Rei to keep her daughter or give her up to the system. From there, the two men raise Miri as their own, being “papa” to the little girl.
The Surprisingly Wholesome Nature
Even though Kazuki and Rei are both assassins, Buddy Daddies touches on both wholesome and severe topics. They’re both so different from one another. Kazuki is more upbeat, optimistic, and full of life than his counterpart. He takes on more of the stereotypical mother role, and though this is mainly done for comedic effect, it eventually reaches a breaking point. One night, Kazuki snaps at Rei and Miri after he’s been caring for them without gratitude. He cooks, cleans, takes Miri to daycare, and picks her up without a ‘thank you.’ Of course, after he leaves them alone, Rei and Miri understand precisely how much he does for them.
Kazuki’s back story is tragic; once you learn it, you understand why he’s so enthusiastic about being a father to Miri. Unlike Rei, he almost immediately embraces the role and everything that comes with it. Miri loves them both but has a special connection with Kazuki, who she goes to for nearly everything. Rei has his traumas and struggles. Just like Kazuki, his trauma influenced how he operated his relationship with Miri. It makes him more aloof and detached, and it isn’t until later in the series that he honestly admits to himself how much she means to him.
In Buddy Daddies, the three of them make up an unconventional but loving little family. With Kazuki and Rei not being romantically involved in any capacity, they are genuinely just two buddies who took on the role of being fathers and raising a little girl together. While the show has its moments of drama, serious discussions, and backstories, there are so many comedic moments, too. After all, it’s a show about two assassins who decide to adopt a little girl together. The plot is ridiculous, and Buddy Daddies never lets you forget it. Much of the series is told in a comedic light, making it wildly entertaining.
Final Thoughts
The charm of Buddy Daddies is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is a part of its charm. You find yourself falling in love with their family and rooting for them every step of the way. Buddy Daddies is wholesome and heartwarming, not only because Kazuki and Rei chose to become fathers to Miri but also because they chose to become each other’s family. While there has been no official announcement for season two of Buddy Daddies, the ending left it open for one, and most fans would love to see Kazuki, Rei, and Miri back on their screens, further solidifying their family bond.
