Arcane arrived on Netflix in 2021. A show that was only meant to give back stories to popular League of Legends characters took on a life of its own. People who had never played League of Legends indulged in the show. Arcane has had such success that it’s now considered canon League lore, which we see as the official backstory of the famed legends. With season two swiftly on its way, let’s talk about season one. There are mild spoilers ahead, but we’re mostly keeping this spoiler-free.
Arcane Season 1
Arcane tells the story of two sisters named Violet and Powder and the world they live in. The sisters live in an underground city called Zaun. The town is so far down that sunlight barely reaches it, something that affects the mental health of people who live there. Zaun sits underneath Piltover, the much wealthier city whose residents don’t have to worry about the things that people from the undercity have to worry about. Food, shelter, and everyday survival are a concern to the people of Zaun, things that people in Piltover don’t worry about in the same way.
Violet and Powder are sisters whose parents died in an attempted revolution between the Undercity and Piltover. Vi is the older sister who always looks out for her little sister, Powder. In the first few episodes, we witness Vi and Powder’s dynamic and how Vi protects and cares for her. Then, there was an incident that Powder had a hand in causing, although it was an accident. It cost Vi and Powder some of their loved ones, friends, and father figure who cared for them.
After this incident, the sisters were never the same, nor were they close again. As time passes, we discover that Powder has lost her mind, a severe trauma response. She is nowhere near being the same girl that we knew in the first few episodes. She has a few mental illnesses and dons a new name. Meanwhile, Vi is trying her hardest to save her little sister again, even if it might cost her everything. Arcane has more elements, such as magic and political conflicts, and poses the question of what makes someone evil. Is it the things they’ve done? Where they’re from? Or is it your own perspective that views them that way?
Jinx
After Powder lost her mind, she began using a different name: Jinx. When she and Vi were younger, they used to do jobs with their friends that involved them stealing from the rich so they could sell the goods to make money. Their two friends, Mylo and Claggor, were very close with the sisters, the four being like a family. However, Powder was always the youngest and wasn’t as experienced as Vi, Mylo, and Claggor. Because of her young age, Powder would make mistakes. These mistakes often were to the mission’s detriment, causing them to lose valuable goods that could have been traded or sold to someone.
Mylo took to calling Powder a jinx, and when Violet echoed that sentiment for the first time, furious with her sister about the disaster that occurred to their loved ones, Powder took on the name as an alternate identity. Jinx and Powder are often called two different people because that’s how it seems. Powder was bubbly, energetic, and kind. Jinx, on the other hand, is angry and cruel and suffers from delusions, hallucinations, and nightmares. Jinx is a captivating villain because you’re never allowed to forget that she behaves this way as a trauma response or that those who loved her when she was Powder still miss her.
As we watch Arcane, we’re repeatedly told that the people who knew and loved Powder consider Jinx a different person, consider Powder dead in their hearts, and mourn her. Arcane brings forth much-needed discussions about trauma and mental illness while also letting their audience know that neither absolves you from the trauma you cause others. It will never feel good to hold Jinx accountable for things she’s done when she went through so much trauma and was also clearly manipulated into being how she is. Still, Arcane has always shown us all sides, including how everyone’s actions affect others. With season 2 on its way, we will surely see the raw aftermath of Jinx’s plans.
Final Thoughts
Season two of Arcane will be released on Netflix in three parts, the first coming out on November 2nd, then November 16th, and finally November 23rd. This will be Arcane’s final season, so fans expect it to wrap up all storylines with a neat bow. We may not get the ending we desire, but we hope it’s satisfying enough to be a great conclusion to what will surely go down as an epic show.
