Science SARU Producing A New Ghost In The Shell Anime in 2024

Here’s some exciting news for all of you dedicated anime fans; Masamune Shirow is creating another adaptation of his legendary manga, Ghost in the Shell. With backing from Japanese animation studio, Science Saru, Ghost in the Shell looks to revive itself to make a comeback to a new generation of anime fans.

Despite its recent announcement, there’s already a release date in 2026. What’s more? Production is already in its early stages. However, nothing is set in stone. Depending on production, you could either be surprised or disappointed with an earlier or later release date. So, just keep your fingers crossed for sooner rather than later.

The Return of Ghost in the Shell

Many anime fans first heard about Ghost in the Shell from Mamoru Oshii’s movie released in 1995. The film version helped popularize anime outside of Japan. As a result of its groundbreaking action and cyberpunk filmmaking, Ghost in the Shell remains the best anime ever created.

Despite its source material, this installment of Ghost in a Shell will take some liberties like other adaptations of the legendary film. Also, keep in mind that even if liberties are taken within this version doesn’t mean that the show won’t be accurate to its source material.

Dissecting Ghost in the Shell’s Legacy

To mainstream audiences, the Ghost in the Shell isn’t as well known as other anime such as Dragonball Z and Pokemon, but still had a long-lasting impact within Hollywood.Creators, Lana and Larry Wachowski and producter Joel Silver, used concepts from the Ghost of the Shell for their iconic film franchise, the Matrix.

To be precise, the Matrix code, or the fallen green code, and how humans enter the Matrix through holes in their necks are the two main concepts taken from the Ghost in the Shell. In addition to the Matrix, other successful films such as Steven Spielberg’s AI Artificial Intellegence, James Cameron’s Avatar, and Jonathan Mostows Surrogates were heavily influenced by Ghost in the Sell too.

The Decline of Cyberpunk in Anime

Cyberpunk in anime wouldn’t have garnered its insane popularity without the success of Shirow’s legendary manga, Ghost in the Shell, propelling the franchise into global stardom upon its release.

Regardless of cyberpunk’s coolness in anime today, the Ghost in the Shell franchise still has its cult following which is still fiending for another installment of the hit film despite the declining popularity of cyberpunk over the years and even the critically panned 2017 film.

What to Take Away from the Teaser

To add further hype for the new Ghost in the Shell anime, a brief teaser was released. Although there’s heavy speculation that the series will be a reboot, neither Shirow nor Science Saru have confirmed it. The teaser does bring back characters like Major Motoko Kusanagi and the Public Security Section 9 through iconic scenes that Ghost in the Shell fans will remember from the 1995 movie, adding more believability to the reboot rumors.

One memorable scene depicted in the teaser shows Motoko leaping from a high rise while activating her iconic cloaking suit. By recreating this great scene, you can see how the new installment will differ from the 1995 film and its sequels despite their influence.
