Andrew Peterson’s ‘The Wingfeather Saga’: What To Know Before The Show

Wingfeather Saga, Andrew Peterson

You may have heard of the Wingfeather Saga animated streaming television show. Before it became a show, it was a four-book series by Andrew Peterson. The four books are centered around a twelve-year-old boy protagonist named Janner Igiby (His surname was later learned to be Wingfeather) and his siblings Tink and Leeli.

Wholesome Family Entertainment

Wingfeather Saga

Although there is some sword combat, it’s no worse than Star Wars. To put it in perspective, most children already know that the world can be scary. The plotline shows there can also be hope and perseverance despite the fear. The books the series is based on are geared for children ages 8 to 14, so they may not be suitable for very young children. Parents can enjoy this with their kids since it has plenty of action.

Basic Sypnosis of the Wingfeather Saga

The series takes place in Aerwiar, a magical world filled with gigantic sea dragons, carnivorous cows, humans and hostile reptilian beings called fangs. A widowed mother with her three children and their grandfather struggle to survive as the evil fangs control their town. The family flees their village to escape them, facing danger along the way. After fighting one of the fangs’ leaders, the family discovers they are part of the royal family of Anniera.

General Reception

Andrew Petersen directly participated in the show’s writing, so many felt it complimented the book series well. When the series debuted, it was streamed 3.5 million times worldwide in its first five weeks. While Petersen identifies as Christian and was produced by Angel Studios, a Christian Production company, the story itself is not overtly Christian. The author hadn’t set out a Christian story.

Therefore, regardless of their beliefs, it shouldn’t deter anyone from enjoying the show. In his own words, Petersen said, “My agenda was simply to tell the best adventure story I could.” The premise is good versus evil, which is universal and transcends many cultures. It is the intention that viewers of all backgrounds who enjoy fantasy and adventure will partake in the Wingfeather Saga.

Crowdfunding in Entertainment

Angel Studios is unique in its approach to crowdfunding shows. The reason behind this is to make the production. Unlike conventional crowdfunding, Angel Studios promises to allow financial backers to have a share of the profits. This means if a show succeeds in earning enough revenue, backers will earn a share of the profits. This also makes the shows free and accessible for others due to the lower production cost.

The caveat is that backers are not guaranteed a return. Each episode costs approximately 1 million dollars, so the production must recover the overhead costs first. It is recommended that backers do not invest more money than they can comfortably lose. The Wingfeather Saga Series crowdfunded $4,997,423 from 7,739 backers at the time of this writing.

Closing Thoughts

Many have noted that the Wingfeather animation style is unique, refreshing and reminiscent of How to Train Your Dragon. It’s suitable for the entire family to enjoy. Akin to the Lord of the Rings or the Chronicles of Narnia, there are underlying morals without any religious agenda. There is no foul language and only mild animated violence. Overall, it is a wholesome program you can let your child watch without worry. For parents, it’s a hit.
