Andrew Garfield Wants to Play Spider-Man Again, But With an Interesting Twist

Andrew Garfield on whether he would play Spider-Man again

Andrew Garfield is perhaps best known for portraying Spider-Man in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man and 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Since he reprised his role in the 2021 Marvel Cinematic Universe film Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans have to wonder if he will ever don the iconic red suit again. Well, Garfield says that he would love to revisit the web-slinger, but there might be conditions.

According to Deadline, Garfield shared what he would want for the return of his Peter Parker at the Middle East Film & Comic Con. At the panel, he stated that if he were to play Spider-Man again, “it would have to be very weird.” He elaborated on what kind of weirdness he would enjoy:

“I would want to do something very unique, and offbeat, and surprising, kind of like the creative freedom that they have with the animated Spider-Verse movies. I think they’re so great and you can honor the character in so many ways through the multiverse.”

Dimension-Hopping with Spider-Man

The animated 2018 film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, explored a vast multiverse with different dimensions and many versions of Spider-Man. Both films were highly acclaimed for their comic book-like art style and their creative storytelling. A third chapter, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verseis set for release in 2027.

Spider-Man: No Way Home also involved universe-hopping, with Tobey Maguire (Peter Parker in the Sam Rami Spider-Man trilogy), Tom Holland (Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe), and Andrew Garfield interacting as three different versions of Spider-Man. It was a treat for audiences to see the three live-action Spider-Man movies working together, and it also opened doors for future possibilities.

Possibilities Within the Multiverse

After The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was panned by both critics and audiences, all planned follow-ups to that film were cancelled. Garfield said No Way Home was “healing” after his Spider-Man’s story was “left dangling.” A fourth Tom Holland movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is set for release in 2026, but with Marvel branching out their multiverse, we could possibly see Holland working with both Maguire and Garfield again. If such a project happens, it will hopefully be as weird and creative as Garfield wants it to be.
