An LGBTQ+ All-Inclusive Choir Provides Community and Improves Mental Health

An LGBTQ+ inclusive choir has been lauded by its members for giving them a community to be a part of,  which in turn has given their mental health a much-needed boost. Founded over 20 years ago to provide an inclusive and open space for members to meet and sing, the Manchester Proud Chorus from England wishes to just make everybody feel welcome.

Manchester Proud Chorus Choir

On the Manchester Proud Chorus website, they state, “For more than 20 years, we have raised our voices together, joyfully celebrating our diversity through music.” At first, they were called the Manchester Lesbian and Gay Chorus;  however, they changed the name to the Manchester Proud Chorus to be more all-inclusive with other sexualities and gender identities outside of just gay and lesbian.

“We are a non-auditioned, community choir that aims to provide a safe and inclusive space for people to meet and sing together, and to promote a positive image of Greater Manchester’s growing LGBTQI+ community. Most importantly we have fun and support each other”. And promote what they do, as they once had the privilege to sing in front of the late Queen Elizabeth II, according to BBC.

Positive impacts

On the other hand, this is far from the only instance that the choir can take pride in. Staying true to the mission to have a positive impact on the community, they have been one of the choirs singing at Manchester Together, a memorial event for the Manchester Arena attack. This was an Islamic terrorist suicide bombing on 22 May 2017, following a concert by Ariana Grande.

Even earlier, in 2014, they had the ‘Safe to Sing’ campaign, singing on trams across Manchester as a result of a homophobic attack on a Manchester tram, according to their website. Even the pandemic wasn’t enough to dissuade the feelings of the community, as they used Zoom to continue singing practice and even went outdoors once rules allowed.

Conclusion

In the same way that the choir is giving happiness to those not in the choir, they are being equally helpful to members of the choir. Tom, a bass singer, said the choir was “the icing on the cake”. He moved to Manchester for “the opportunity to be myself”, he said. “I’ve never felt so at home before, I’ve never been happier,” he stated.“I found my partner through it, and it’s made me a much happier, more confident person”, according to the BBC.

Angie, who moved to Manchester from living in the United States to look after her mother, said the choir gave her an “instant community”. “I am in my mid-60s, so I’m not going to go and sit in a bar. I needed to do something because we all need community,” she said. “And I love singing so I joined, and it’s the best thing that could’ve happened for me”, according to the BBC.
