The American Music Awards 2025 is shaping up to again be one of the biggest music industry award shows of the year. The awards are determined by the commercial success of a star in the American music landscape, measured in sales as well as plays and presence on airwaves. The American Music Awards were originally intended to compete with the Grammy Awards, but have since established themselves as their own successful standalone. The Grammys may have more overall prestige, but that does not take away from the honor of the nomination or win for any of the artists.
American Music Awards 2025 Nominees Reveal Diversity Of Artists
The American Music Awards 2025 just released the nominees for their award show on Wednesday, April 23, and the list reflects several artists who have dominated the industry through the course of the year. Post Malone’s newest country album venture earned him 8 different nominations, while Billie Eilish, Chappell Roan all had 7 nominations a piece. It should come as no surprise, though, that the big winner in nominations with a total of 10 is Kendrick Lamar, whose beef with Drake, headline-gathering diss track, and most-watched Super Bowl halftime show of all time, rocketed the rap star into massive popularity.
Of course, Taylor Swift is once again a presence at the American Music Awards 2025. Often described as the winningest artist in AMA history, Swift and her 40 previous award wins will again have the chance to clean up the AMAs. It feels strange to refer to her receiving just 6 nominations as a down year, yet that is how powerful her actual legacy is. Time will see how many of those nominations turn into wins and add to her extensive trophy collection. Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Morgan Wallen, Sabrina Carpenter, and SZA, who is touring with Kendrick Lamar, all also have 6 nominations a piece.
The other big storyline is both Post Malone and Beyonce branching far out of their typical wheelhouse to release country albums over the last year. Both albums were critically well-received and occasionally sparked controversy among fans. It will be interesting to see if either of these artists breaks into their new categories with an award win.
According to CBS, “Nominees are based on key fan interactions, as reflected on the Billboard charts. That includes streaming, song and album sales, radio airplay, and tour grosses. Measurements are tracked by Billboard and Luminate.” After nominations are selected, it is up to the fans to vote for a winner. Voting is currently open on VoteAMAs.com or the American Music Awards 2025 Instagram page, with votes closing on May 15.
