A Grateful Heart Can Be Seen, Felt, and Heard

A Grateful Heart Gratitude

While it’s difficult to find a person who openly admits he or she lacks gratitude, the unvarnished and unadulterated truth is many don’t possess a grateful heart. When an ungrateful heart and spirit manifest themselves for all to see, most people recognize that their moral and spiritual ugliness will be exposed by the metaphorical sunlight, which, of course, is the best disinfectant. Given this, ungrateful people try to conceal the absence of gratitude.

The notion of gratitude has increasingly become so bastardized that authentic understandings of what it means in practice are regrettably unavailable. Therefore, more clarity about how gratitude looks, feels, and sounds is needed.

A Grateful Heart in Action

When you have a grateful heart, it bears fruit. A grateful heart reveals itself through tangible evidence. People often claim they’re grateful for what others do and/or have done for them. However, when will they do something that will show authentic gratitude? By “do something,” the present writer does not intend to convey that gratitude discloses itself in one singular act because it doesn’t. A grateful heart organically leads one to perform multiple acts throughout one’s relationship with another. Of course, don’t be a gullible giver.

However, a stark difference exists between gullible givers and ungrateful people. If a person has given and/or allowed you to borrow money multiple times, it should be second nature for you to give her or him some money occasionally. This isn’t an effort to repay her or him all the money given unless it was loaned; it’s a material acknowledgment of what has been done for you. Think about it: Did the person supply you with money only once? Exactly.

If possible, you don’t need to tell her or him when you send the money, especially if you have the individual’s Zelle, Venmo, PayPal, Cash App, etc. information. You don’t have to wallow in pity if this exposes you. Go ahead and send your first cash gift to that person. Let her or him feel the welcome surprise. The same is true about time. If someone has invested significant time in you, seek opportunities to evince your gratitude for the time they’ve dedicated to you.

Gratitude Can Be Felt

You can identify a person with a truly grateful heart; he or she loves on a higher level than most. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., stated, “Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” Also, King asserted, “An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

In the previously mentioned quotations, Dr. King explained that one must employ an altruistic and collectivist mindset to make people feel gratitude. When you have a grateful heart, it oozes with a deep love, which flows to the person who has shown you love. Genuine love is inextricably linked to gratitude. If you’re grateful for what people have done and are doing for you, they will feel your love.

Selfishness is a powerful energy and spirit people can feel, too. To eradicate the selfishness in your heart that causes you to lack gratitude, use prayer as the vehicle for deliverance from its ugliness. A spirit of selfishness will inevitably ruin your life.

Gratefulness Heard

Selfishness is so potent that it convinces people that their vacuous “thank you” suffices for genuine gratitude. While saying “thank you” is necessary, this expression must be combined with what has been communicated in the above two sections to possess substance. The present writer has shown people many substantial acts of kindness, only to receive an often dry or casual “thank you.” You would think people would try to convey at least some excitement after such kindness.

When someone does something for you, what you say in response to her or his kindness should reflect something more than a simple “thank you,” especially when you know what you say lacks passion. A grateful heart communicates a passionate thankfulness. Colossians 3:15 proclaims, “And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.”

When peace doesn’t “rule” your heart, you lack gratitude. Therefore, you need to engage in a critical heart assessment. Does peace govern your heart and life? As imparted in Colossians 3:16, a certain “grace” springs from one’s mouth when gratefulness is at the center of her or his heart. Do you have a voice of gratitude?

Parting Thoughts

If you wish to know whether your efforts at showing gratitude are bearing fruit, meaning accomplishing what you intend, ask some people who have done things for you. No matter what their responses are, don’t become defensive. Learn from their feedback. A grateful heart appreciates all feedback.
