The MonsterVerse is growing exponentially, and it’s been a long time coming. From 2014’s Godzilla till now with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, fans of American Godzilla, along with Kong, have a lot to look forward to in terms of future movies and series.
On April 11th, Apple TV+ announced that Monarch: Legacy of Monsters will be getting a second season, and multiple spin-offs are coming. With five films and two series, it is awesome to see this franchise in the making for the past decade.
MonsterVerse Monarch: LOM S2 Filming Soon
According to an interview Anna Sawai did with ScreenRant, she teased her character returning for season two of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, among other things. The star mentioned that she expects production on the new season to begin sometime “soon” and is optimistic about getting back on set.
“…I hope, that we’re going to be shooting it soon because if we don’t shoot it soon, that means everyone’s going to be waiting for 2-3 years until the second season comes out. So, I believe it might be the next thing I do. Maybe.”
The main plot is under wraps for the new season and a release date has not been announced. It is assumed Kong from 2017’s Kong: Skull Island will be involved in the new Godzilla series. It will be interesting how everything in the MonsterVerse will tie together and if the Monarch cast will cross over to the big screen for upcoming Godzilla movies.
In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard didn’t want to spoil the potential future of MonsterVerse films after The New Empire.
” I think everybody is kind of waiting around to see how the movie does this weekend, and then I think that’s when the next discussion of what the future of the franchise is probably going to look like. I think things like that will fall into place based on what the appetite is and what the plan is going to be going forward.”

This is huge for the lore of the MonsterVerse, with the films and series just scratching the surface.
This could mean appearances in the Godzilla and Kong franchises from other Monsters or Mutos (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms). New Titans could also be coming, as well as the exploration of other MonsterVerse timelines within the Hollow Earth. It is uncertain about the number of spin-offs fans will get and if they are movies or just seasonal series on Apple TV+.
Even Toho’s kaiju monsters are possible to bring from Japan, as co-creator Chris Black said in an interview with The Verge when talking about season two.
“Toho have been incredible collaborators and I think any of their creations would be available to us if we wanted to bring them into our world.”
Some big-name kaiju from the original Godzilla movies that could be at play include Destoroyah, SpaceGodzilla, Ebirah, Gorosaurus, Hedorah, Baragon, Varan, King Caesar, Anguirus, and Titanosaurus.
This didn’t seem like a possibility before, as Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Michael Dougherty from 2019 stated in an interview with Rue Morgue that they would need to purchase the rights to the monsters from Japan for them to be in Legendary Pictures film.
The budget would potentially be an issue, so this sentiment changing for the mini-series recently is good news for MonsterVerse fans. This fact leads to a whole new world of possibilities and interesting ideas that can be spawned from this notion alone.
MonsterVerse Monarch: LOM S1 Review
This was released on November 23rd last year, just one month before Japan’s Godzilla Minus One came out and aired for ten episodes. The premise comes after the events of 2014’s Godzilla, showing another side of the story after Godzilla vs. Kong in 2021.
It headlines the Russells, Kurt Russell, and his son, Wyatt Russell, who essentially play the same character.
Sawai, of Hulu’s popular series Shōgun, is in this, along with John Goodman, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watanabe, Mari Yamamoto, and Anders Holm as the main cast.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters was meant to bridge the gap between timelines from various MonsterVerse movies, including the most recent Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Godzilla x Kong hit theaters last month and is the second-highest box office grossing for 2024 next to Dune 2.
This isn’t related to the wildly successful Japanese Godzilla movies, so it is interesting to see the two sides expanding at their own pace. With Godzilla Minus One winning plenty of awards and setting records in 2023, it is nice to see the interest in Kaiju films growing in recent times for the rapidly expanding IP.
