The world-renowned fantasy RPG Dungeons and Dragons has influenced global culture in many ways. Over the past years, it has spawned literature, video games, movies, and television series. And one of the most recent is the animated series, The Legend of Vox Machina. The Amazon Prime Video show, based on the Critical Role web show, became popular quickly. It has run for two seasons, and a third season will premiere very soon.
The Show Behind the Show
Critical Role is the parent show of The Legend of Vox Machina. The premise is that ‘nerdy voice actors’ come together and play Dungeons and Dragons. The cast consists of typically eight actors, with one being the game master. Matthew Mercer, Travis Willingham, Laura Bailey, and Marisha Ray are part of the cast. The roster includes Ashley Johnson, Sam Riegel, Liam O’Brien, and Taliesin Jaffe. And each cast member is an icon in the voice-acting industry.
Critical Role aired initially on Felicia Day’s Geek & Sundry on March 12, 2015. Then, in 2018, Critical Role became independent and began streaming on Twitch and YouTube. The show launched a Kickstarter in 2019 to raise funds for a Vox Machina special. Shortly, the petition achieved its goal and exceeded fifteen times the requested amount. Amazon Studios‘ Melissa Wolfe soon contacted Reigel and proposed turning the special into a series.
The Legend of Vox Machina
The Legend of Vox Machina takes inspiration from the first campaign featured on Critical Role. The show follows the adventures of a band of heroes known as Vox Machina. This group features the gunslinger Percival, the bard Scanlan, and the barbarian Grog. There is also the cleric Pike, the ranger Vex’ahlia, and her rogue twin brother Vax’ildan. Rounding out the group is the druid Keyleth and Trinket, Vex’ahlia’s pet bear.
During The Legend of Vox Machina Season One, the heroes took on the Briarwoods. They worked to liberate Percival’s hometown from the necromancer Delilah and her vampire husband, Sylas. The heroes succeed, but there is no time to rest before Season Two. Vox Machina must fight to stop the Chroma Conclave, a band of fearsome dragons. To do this, the band seek out powerful artifacts known as the Vestiges of Divergence. And they will continue their conflict against the Conclave in the next season.
The Upcoming Season Three
Over a month ago, the trailer for The Legend of Vox Machina Season Three dropped. It revealed that Vox Machina will journey to Hell or a demonic realm. The reason is currently unknown, though it likely is connected to stopping the Chroma Conclave. It could also have something to do with obtaining another Vestige of Divergence. Raishan, the Conclave’s green dragon, will seemingly assist the team in their quest. Other scenes in the trailer showcase Thordak attacking, demons chasing the heroes, and someone’s death.
Recently, Twitter (now X) posted a sneak peek of The Legend of Vox Machina. It featured the twins Vex and Vax performing reconnaissance on Thordak’s volcanic lair. Vax manages to sneak inside to find Thordak and Vorugal in a discussion. However, the conversation is interrupted when Vorugal senses the rogue half-elf. Vax sneaks away and discovers Thordak’s hatchery, but Thordak discovers him. The red dragon pursues the rogue, but Vax manages to escape and fly away.
Final Thoughts
Season Three of The Legend of Vox Machina looks incredible. It promises to be just as thrilling as the previous two seasons. And it’s possible this season will showcase the defeat of the Chroma Conclave. After that, the story may continue, bringing in Vecna the Whispered One. The third season of The Legend of Vox Machina will premiere on October 3.
