John Allen Amos Jr. was born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, to a father who was an auto mechanic. John Amos graduated with a sociology degree and was on the school’s football team. Before commencing his acting career, he moved to New York and was a social worker at the Vera Institute of Justice. He was briefly a professional footballer, having played in minor leagues, and at one point, he signed a free-agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs in 1967. His coach, however, convinced him to pursue a writing career, which he did, but then, he moved to the camera.
John Amos’ Acting Career
John Amos’ first major TV role was as Gordy Howard, the weatherman on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and the only African American character on the show, from 1970-73. He made his breakthrough as Father James Evans Sr. in CBS’ Good Times, a spinoff of Maude and All in the Family 1974. His role resonated with the audience as he was depicted as a hardworking and devoted father. Amos, however, was fired after the third season, and his character was killed at the beginning of season four.
Amos then made another breakthrough with his role as adult Kunta Kinte in the ABC historical miniseries Roots. His role landed him an Emmy nomination, and the show won nine Emmys, a Golden Globe, and a Peabody Award. Due to its discussion of slavery in the United States, the show received massive viewership in the country. Over 130 million people watched the show, and its finale was the second-most-watched series finale in history.
Amos also appeared in About the Andersons, The West Wing, Two and a Half Men, and The Ranch, in addition to his appearance as himself in the series Suits LA. John Amos and Kelly Christopher Amos also produced the upcoming documentary about John Amos’ life, America’s Dad. Furthermore, he made appearances in movies such as Coming to America and its sequel Coming 2 America, Die Hard 2, The Beastmaster, Lock Up, and Me Tyme.
