Netflix’s The Perfect Couple is a gorgeous mystery series about the wedding of the season, which goes off the rails when a body is discovered and everyone in attendance becomes a suspect. These people are rich enough to get away with murder. But did they actually kill someone? Given how many secrets they’re hiding, we can’t really give them the benefit of the doubt.
The Heart of the Mystery
The perfect couple that gives the series its name consists of Greer, a famous novelist, and her long-time husband, Tag. They are filthy rich and have three children: Benji, Thomas, and Will. The series revolves around Benji’s upcoming nuptials to Amelia, who doesn’t come from money. Meanwhile, Thomas is married to to his pregnant wife, Abby. Completing the ensemble are Merritt and Shooter, the maid of honor and best man, respectively.
As everyone gathers for the wedding at Greer’s fabulous mansion, a body is discovered, and the police start an investigation. Was it an accidental death, a suicide, or a cold-blooded murder? They interview the wedding party, hoping to get to the bottom of things. However, things only get more confusing when all sorts of sordid secrets come to life, casting suspicion on everyone.
Starring in The Perfect Couple
The Perfect Couple stars Nicole Kidman, who gained international prominence in the ’90s with roles in movies like Batman Forever, Practical Magic, and Eyes Wide Shut. She won an Academy Award for portraying Virginia Woolf in drama The Hours, and is well-known for blockbusters including Moulin Rouge!, The Others, Cold Mountain, and Australia, to name only a few. As far as television goes, Kidman starred in popular dramas like Big Little Lies, The Undoing, and Nine Perfect Strangers.
Greer’s husband Tag is played by Liev Schreiber, whom you might know from the Showtime drama Ray Donovan, or his film roles in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Kate & Leopold, Spotlight, or Asteroid City. Billy Howle (The Beast Must Die), Jack Reynor (Midsommar), and Sam Nivola (Eileen) play the couple’s three children.
Rounding out the main cast, Eve Hewson portrays bride-to-be Amelia. Her previous credits include the 2014 series The Knick and movies Flora and Son, Bridge of Spies, and Enough Said. Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus) plays the maid of honor, while Ishaan Khatter (A Suitable Boy) plays the best man. Finally, Dakota Fanning appears as Abby, Thomas’s pregnant wife. She was recently in Ripley, The Alienist, The Equalizer 3, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Ocean’s 8.
Final Thoughts
Besides the family at the heart of the show, The Perfect Couple also stars Donna Lynne Champlin as Nikki Henry, a detective investigating the case. She previously played Paula Proctor on the underrated comedy-drama Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Michael Beach (Saw X) portrays the police chief and Mia Isaac (Not Okay) plays his daughter. The supporting cast features Isabelle Adjani, Tim Bagley, and Adina Porter.
With such a star-studded ensemble, The Perfect Couple is a must-watch. The performances are top-notch and the mystery will keep you guessing and trying to work out the solution for yourself.
