5 LGBTQ Fall-themed songs to keep you Cozy

LGBTQ songs

The annual coming of fall season brings changes in the weather, pumpkin spice latte season, and adding songs that fit the season to your playlist. This is especially true for songs by LGBTQ artists since the fall season is like Christmas for some queer people. From enthusiastic dance beats to sad love songs to listen to, this list offers both known artists and newcomers to put into your playlist.

Brandi Carlile, “The Story”

A well-known name in the folk rock scene, Brandi Carlile’s first hit came with the 2007 single, “The Story.” “The Story,” from the album of the same name, is a sentimental tribute to those who provide companionship and support, even in hard times. With lyrics such as, “You see the smile that’s on my mouth, It’s hiding the words that don’t come out, And all of my friends who think that I’m blessed, They don’t know my head is a mess,” it makes obvious the theme of alienation.

This leads to the resounding conviction of, “No, they don’t know who I really am/And they don’t know what I’ve been through like you do.” It’s obvious that it is meant to be a celebration of authentic understanding and connection with somebody special. Thus, it’s no surprise this song has been a go-to in sentimental playlists for LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ folks.

Omar Apollo, “Ice Slippin'”

In a tune that mixes smooth, mournful R&B singing with equally smooth rapping, newcomer Omar Apollo doesn’t disappoint. “Ice Slippin” is the first single from Apollo’s EP, Live For Me. The EP is the follow-up to his debut EP Ivory, which earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist.

Apollo, the openly gay son of Mexican immigrants, said in a press release for the latest track, “Ice Slippin is about reliving the thoughts I had passing through my mind the winter I came out to my family. Receiving cold judgment as opposed to the acceptance I felt I deserved. This song is a reflection and reaction of all the emotions I had to face before and after I decided to leave the icy streets of Indiana.”

Bebe Stockwell, “Love Me Back”

For a song that is more upbeat in tone, the folk-pop tune “Love Me Back” from newbie Bebe Stockwell is the answer. From the album of the same name, the lyrics tell a tale of having different comfort levels when it comes to intimacy in relationships but still desiring affection from the person. Stockwell softly sings lyrics like, “Affection don’t come easy, Even if I can’t hold you like that, Would you love me back? Would you love me back?”

Plus, the music video for the song shows needle-felt sloths idyllically rolling around with the easy-going song in the background. If that isn’t enough to add this tune to a playlist, it’s not clear what will.

Bronze Avery, “SCAN AND COPY”

If the sentimental feeling is not a listener’s cup of tea, then Bronze Avery has got you covered with the chill, dance-flavored tune “SCAN AND COPY.” Avery, whose real name is Gabriel Brown, released “SCAN AND COPY” as a single for his album, Heatwave. The music video for the song features Avery dancing without abandon with dancers in an abandoned office building, highlighting the themes of easygoing, flirtiness with romantic attraction.

Kieynan Lonsdale, “Lessons”

Actor turned musician Kieynan Lonsdale is no stranger to LGBTQ themes prior to his R&B song, “Lessons.” Staring alongside Nick Robinson for the LGBTQ coming-of-age drama Love, Simon, he later came out as gay in a 2022 interview with BuzzFeed. “Lessons” came out as a single with R&B style, recounting the struggles of being in a relationship.

Conclusion

If you’re looking to discover smaller LGBTQ artists that deliver a much-needed sentimental feeling to your decked-out fall playlist, these are good selections. If you are looking for love dance songs to play in the background while you decorate, add these five. If you are already familiar with some of the talented people mentioned in the list yet haven’t heard some of the songs, you should definitely give these amazing artists a listen.
