Krapopolis: A Comedic Situation About Unity

Krapopolis

Set in a world similar to Ancient Greece but more of a parody, Krapopolis is an adult cartoon series with a parody version of the already chaotic and unorderly family of the Greek deities living on Olympus. Fair warning: This page will contain spoilers for new fans who came here to read about the show before watching. It is very understandable, however, for any new fans to want to study before watching, as it is nice to know what to expect, especially considering how much disaster Krapopolis will have.

Since Krapopolis is a show set in an off-brand world of Ancient Greece, let’s first learn about real ancient Greece. This is so that we can better understand the setting and prepare for what the creators either changed, added, or removed from the real setting in the cartoon. This is just a fun way to see how they created or added some of their aspects about the setting of Krapopolis while keeping it based on a real place. It’s something that many love to know about when world-building!

Ancient Greece had a warm, dry climate like today’s Greece; the common jobs ranged from farming, fishing, and trading, while the higher jobs were of scholars, doctors, artists, sculptors, and soldiers. People with common jobs lived a poor life due to a lack of farmland, wood, and water. As a result, they constructed normal buildings using a range of stone, mud-brick, and wood, and instead of glass, they used wooden shutters. The only light sources were oil lamps and candles.

The Ancient Greeks wore tunics made of cotton or linen, and the enslaved ones only had loincloth; wide-brimmed hats were common in the sunlight, and some women used white lead as makeup. Yes, it was poisonous; yes, some died. The meat was for the rich, and the children also had pets or their variations of toys. All in all, living in ancient Greece was like living in any other ancient civilization; the only difference was the culture and religion.

The Greek Deities

Now, onto the deities that the cast was inspired by, and not surprisingly, most should know that the actual Greek deities were far more insane and messed up. Truth is stranger than fiction. There is no original or main text or anything about the Greek gods, much like any other beings, and many stories about them vary when telling about their personalities. When it comes to reading about them, you need to be very careful and observant when it comes to stories of the traditional gods on Mt. Olympus by being able to tell whether they are from Roman or Greek texts.

Krapopolis has a set number of characters, and the stories for each one are easier to understand than those of the Greek gods since it makes it simpler for the writers and animators to keep track of. That’s not the case in real life. Still, for a quick summary, all the Greek deities live on Mt. Olympus, and there are twelve main ones: Zeus, Hera, Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Ares, Athena, Demeter, Dionysus, Hephaestus, Hermes, and Poseidon. Read through some Greek mythology and you’ll learn they are all related thanks to Zeus, and for those wondering about Hades, he resides in the Underworld, and for good reason. (Pick your favorite!)

There are many differing stories about each of them, and even listing the basic information would require a whole page for each deity. It’s a good thing Krapopolis only chose to have five deities. If you want to know more about the gods, it may be best to go to reliable sources specializing in studying them. The stories are numerous, and the timelines are a bit confusing.

Krapopolis

Animated by Fox Animation Domination and an odd new series from Emmy award winner Dan Harmon, the co-creator who made Rick and Morty, it airs every Sunday on FOX and Hulu the next day. Krapopolis centers around a parody of the Greek gods, written as a dysfunctional family that is very close to the actual Greek gods, only that Krapopolis depicts it as somehow friendlier.

It is essentially a slice-of-life journey about this dysfunctional family consisting of deities, humans, monsters, and possibly hybrids, trying to take care of running one of the first cities and not messing up. There are currently three seasons out right now, with the main cast consisting of five characters, featuring all-star actors from other popular films to voice them.

Hannah Waddingham as Deliria, the mother of the king; Richard Ayoade as Tyrannis, the ruler; Matt Berry as Shlub the centaur; Duncan Trussel as Hippocampus, who is a walking, talking fish humanoid; and Pam Murphy as Stupendous, the buffet character in the main cast. The website linked above will have more information about each character and when and where Krapopolis airs. Unlike other adult cartoons, each character is insanely unique, and they rarely fall into stereotypes just for satire.

Conclusion

The reasons why Dan Harmon decided to create Krapopolis can likely be found on either the Krapopolis website, interviews or Q&As about the show, or on his social media. For anyone who has become curious about learning more about the Greek gods, there are many reliable sources to choose from. You may need to know that most Greek mythology stories tell about other characters, only involving certain deities. For adults who only want to watch something entertaining and relatable to modern life, Krapopolis will be a nice break and stress reliever.
