Blink 182 is among the latest comeback kids of pop-punk. After reforming in 2023, the band released a new album called One More Time; on September 6 of this year, they released One More Time, Part 2. Historically, the band appealed to teenagers with their catchy riffs and sometimes — we’ll say it — childish lyrics, but hey, that’s punk; it’s supposed to be rebellious. Let’s take a look at the band and their comeback album one more time.
The Rise of Blink 182
In 1999, Blink 182 was already popular in punk and alternative circles. When their Enema of the State album dropped later that year, it launched them into mainstream superstardom. Popular hits like “What’s My Age Again” and “All the Small Things” kept pumping on MTV. While their music wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea, their songs dominated the radio stations in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Staying Relevant As Older Rockers
Blink 182’s songs resonated with teens and young adults; they dealt with feelings of unseen, unheard and being unrepresented. As older adults, these feelings can still be relevant. The current band members, Travis Barker, 48, Tom DeLonge, 48, and Mark Hoppus, 52, are going strong; Hoppus reports that he’s successfully beating cancer. Now, the lyrics about frustrations are still there, but they’re different now, dealing with marriage, parenting, and even health issues.
Their Latest Work
The band is known for its humor, albeit lowbrow. For better or for worse, they still have the same comical side as in their younger days. In their 2023 album One More Time, there’s a masturbation joke. The music itself is still just as catchy as ever. Love them or hate them, you can’t deny they’re a talented group of musicians. One More Time, Part 2‘s sound beckons back to their earlier days, so it isn’t simply a continuation of their previous album.
The Award-Winning Double Singles
The band released tandem singles in late August before the big release of One More Time, Part 2. The songs “All In My Head” and “No Fun” became instant top 10 hits on the same roster. Both debuted on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart and the Rock & Alternative Airplay list at number 9 and number 10, respectively. That’s not too shabby for a group of older punk rockers, who proved that they still have it.
Blink 182’s Members And Reunion
In 2015, the band’s guitarist, Tom Delonge, decided to pursue his non-musical interests. Though he left on amicable terms, the future of Blink 182 was uncertain. With an intense interest in UFOs and the paranormal, Delonge wanted to venture more into the world of the extraterrestrial. The change may have started in 2008, when drummer Travis Barker cheated death in a near-fatal plane crash.
Bassist Mark Hoppus has been open about his battle with lymphoma (even if it was accidental at first), and he remains optimistic about his prognosis. Understandably, these events would undoubtedly change anyone’s perspective on life. They may have prompted Tom Delonge, who remained a close friend with his bandmates during his departure, to return to Blink 182 in 2022. Hoppus admitted their best work was when Delonge was part of the band.
Final Thoughts
Like it or not, Blink 182 is part of a generation’s soundtrack. They’ve broken up and reunited twice and seem to be back even more robust than ever, much like the band members themselves. In a GQ Magazine interview, Hoppus said, “Cancer survivors of the same lymphoma that I had even put together a video where they covered a Blink song, and it made me cry.” The song they covered was “All The Small Things.”
Travis Barker’s near-death experience was also no doubt humbling for him as well. The crash killed four people onboard the plane, and Barker struggled with survivor’s guilt for a long while afterward. In an iHeartRadio interview, Barker said, “I cherish every day like it’s my last. I think people that have cheated death just do it differently.” The band has been through so much, but they still have the same edge. Even if you’re not a fan, you can at least respect them for their tenacity.
