I was a late entrant to the world of Ben Tennyson and the Omnimatrix, but when I got started at some point during the late 2000s I was hooked. Ben 10 the sci-fi cartoon series from 2005 and its more mature successor Ben 10: Alien Force (2008) are among the best renowned animated series to come from Cartoon Network. At a time when there was a dearth of top-quality shows in the animated world, Ben 10 held its own for the good part of a decade.
Fans of the cartoons and related media, including the comics will have answers to most questions on the topic of the 10-year-old super-powered watch user. But there is one question that many still find tricky to answer: why was Ben Tennyson chosen by the Omnimatrix?

For those who have followed the story as it unfolded in the animated series, the events leading up to Ben’s discovery of the Omnimatrix also known as the Omnitrix, appear straightforward. Ben’s encounter with the crashed pod that contained the alien device was a fortuitous one. That Ben, being the brave and inquisitive boy that he is, was bound to engage.
In the background, there is the bigger story of the arch-villain Vilgax who wants the Omnitrix for himself. This naturally meant that Ben 10, now in possession of the powerful device or rather the device that has possessed him, challenged this powerful foe. Now given how the series turned out, with Tennyson battling countless enemies throughout four seasons, in time unlocking the new powers and unearthing the secrets of the device, what becomes apparent is the necessary confrontation with Vilgax. The perennial foe of life and freedom that requires a hero to stand up to.
Was it Fate or Sheer Dumb Luck?
For those who watched the Ben 10 series right through: that is the original 4 seasons, followed by Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien it will become apparent that Ben is more than just his powerful watch. There is heart, character, and a thinking mind that can problem-solve quickly. The Omnimatrix and the various versions the hero comes in possession of are supplemented by the critical thinking curiosity and bravery of the hero.
As the show went on, it became clear that the Omnitrix chose Ben, and not the other way around. Almost Harry Potter-like, in terms of his wand. Notable here is the confrontation with the Highbreed after Ben: Alien Force season 02, with the enemy forces on the brink of destroying Earth and other planets, all hope seems lost. A moment when even the immensely knowledgeable Azmuth lost all hope. But at that moment Ben opts to help the enemy rather than fight them. Using the power of the Omnimatrix to heal the genetic damage of all Highbreed. This is what sets Ben Tennyson apart.
Azmuth Knows Best
Azmuth the Galvan and the creator of the Omnitrix is considered to be the smartest being in the galaxy and beyond, the one who eventually came to accept that Ben 10, the young, irrepressible Terran is the rightful owner of what is arguably the most powerful device in the galaxy. There are many instances in the animated series where Azmuth, whilst full of uncertainty eventually gives into the idea that Ben 10 is the one to hold and wield the Omnitrix. A true hero with a hero’s heart.
