The sequel to the 2016 animated film Sausage Party: Foodtopia has arrived on Amazon Prime. A total of eight episodes were released simultaneously, which is the entire season. Many hope this film will give the franchise a second chance on the silver screen.
As the original film was released nearly a decade ago, many members of the audience may have forgotten the first one. Many wonder what the sequel offers because the original was so unique. Here is a breakdown of the new Prime Video series, Sausage Party: Foodtopia.
‘Foodtopia’ Arrives on Prime
Prime Video recently released its latest animated series, Sausage Party: Foodtopia. The comedy series is a sequel to the original 2016 film ‘Sausage Party’. With the sentient foods from the last movie overthrowing humanity, they must figure out how to properly run a society. This is not the only show Seth Rogen oversees for the streaming platform, as he also produces The Boys and Invincible.
The series has most of the original cast, with Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, and Ed Norton returning to voice the main characters. The film’s original director, DreamWorks veteran Conrad Vernon, returned to direct the series. Additionally, Sam Richardson and Will Forte have joined the new cast. Binging it will be relatively easy as the season has only eight 20-minute episodes.
The Original ‘Sausage Party’
In 2016, Sony Pictures and Point Grey Pictures released Sausage Party. The film was a satire of Pixar films such as Toy Story, following sentient food items as they discover their life purpose. Despite being a parody, the team put great effort into its authenticity, even hiring Disney’s own Alan Menken as a composer. The film’s appeal was the novelty of seeing a kid’s animated film with such edgy humor. Unfortunately, reports would emerge of the poor working conditions of the film’s animators.
The film itself received generally negative reviews. To many critics, it embodied the worst stereotypes surrounding adult animation in the West: raunchy humor, overreliance on shock value, and lack of depth. Additionally, it held the title for the highest-grossing R-rated animated film until 2021’s Demon Slayer: Mugen Train. Fortunately, Seth Rogen would redeem himself in the eyes of animation fans with 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

Before the series’s release, many saw this series as unnecessary. In the eight years since its release, critics have not vindicated the forgotten film, nor has it gained a substantial cult following. The trailer on YouTube alone has more dislikes than likes, a dark omen by the website’s standards. Furthermore, the original film ended without a sequel hook, baffling audiences as to why a follow-up series was approved.
In general, reception for this new series has been as poor as the original film. Most early reviewers criticized the series for being just as crass and low-brow as the first film. Furthermore, much like the recent Megamind Rules, many onlookers see this series as a below-par successor to an ancient animated film. While a possible second season may have space to fix things, overall, this franchise seems inedible.
