Showering is something that everyone must do. It is essential for those who wish to become healthier as well as those who wish to maintain the good health that they already have. Furthermore, it can also be a great way to relax. There are very few things that are better than taking a long hot shower after a stressful day.
In addition to that, doing so can be an effective way to feel some temporary relief from pain. Plus, it is always nice to smell fresh and clean. However, there are some negative things that can come along with taking a shower as well. This might be hard for some to imagine, but there are times during which it is actually unsafe for one to do so. For example, it is not a good idea to shower during a thunderstorm, and there are quite a few reasons why that’s true.
Taking A Shower Inside Doesn’t Mean You’ll Be Safe
When people hear that a thunderstorm is on the way, they might not feel as though that is a big deal. Oftentimes, things like tornadoes, earthquakes, and hurricanes can seem much scarier. Therefore, they might not do much planning ahead of time when it comes to being safe during regular storms.
But one safety measure that they must take is not assuming that they will be able to safely take a shower just because they’re doing so inside of their home. That is because when lightning hits a building, it can actually travel through the building’s plumbing and electrocute the person who is taking a shower.
The Same Is True In An RV, Plus They Can Be Moved
Lots of people love to travel, and some of them prefer to travel in airplanes and regular motor vehicles. However, others enjoy traveling in an RV, and they may be under the impression that showering in one of those during a thunderstorm is different and less risky than doing so indoors.
However, that could not be further from the truth, so travelers should be cautious when it comes to going on a trip during a thunderstorm. Just like when someone is showering in a building, they can get struck by lightning while showering in an RV as well. In addition to that, another thing that puts them in danger is the fact that the storm may be able to move the RV.
Avoid Other Sources Of Water At Home, Too
While there are quite a few people aware of the fact that it is unsafe to shower anywhere during a thunderstorm, they might not know that using water in other ways during a time like that is also unsafe. Washing things like dishes (and fruit) can be rather dangerous as well.
That is because plumbing and water are not a great mix when there is lightning and thunder going on outside. Therefore it is best to try to avoid things like showers and faucets no matter where a person is at when there’s a storm happening.
Even Water That’s Outside Is Not A Good Thing To Be Around
While some might be under the impression that they should only avoid sources of water that are located indoors during a thunderstorm, that is not the case. Water, in general, just seems pretty dangerous when it comes to thunderstorms.
This means that one should try their best to stay away from things like lakes, beaches, rivers and oceans when they know that a thunderstorm is on the way. They should also avoid showers that may be outdoors. Water that is in spots like that is just as good at conducting electricity as water that one uses during a regular shower or a bath.
If You’re Swimming, Count
While avoiding being in the water at all is the best move when one knows that a storm is on the way, it is possible to get caught in the middle of an unexpected one. During a shower, a person can simply stop what they’re doing and step out. But that’s not the case for times during which a person might be going for a swim.
If one is swimming when they notice a thunderstorm coming, they should try counting to 30. If they hear thunder again while they’re counting or when they’re done, that means that the storm is approximately six miles away and that they should get out of the water as soon as they can. That is because storms can move quickly, so staying longer would increase a person’s chance of getting hurt.
Not being able to shower during a thunderstorm can be a huge inconvenience, but being electrocuted would be much worse. In addition to that, swimming is fun, but it is best for one not to put their life at risk. Fortunately, there are some safety measures that can be taken.
