This article will focus on summer reads, breaking down some of the best new releases just in time for summer 2024. There are books of many genres on the list, although the most popular genre for the summertime is unquestionably romance novels. Without further ado, here are five books to look forward to in the summer of 2024!

Summer Read #1

Good Material by Dolly Alderton

Another great summer read is Good Material, a romance novel by Dolly Alderton centered on the life of burgeoning comedian Andy Dawson. Andy’s life is inexplicably turned upside down when her four-year relationship unexpectedly comes to an abrupt end. The New York Times included Good Material on their list of  “The Best Books of the Year (So Far)” and described the book by stating, “Alderton’s novel, about a 35-year-old struggling to make sense of a breakup, delivers the most delightful aspects of romantic comedy — snappy dialogue, realistic relationship dynamics, funny meet-cutes and misunderstandings — and leaves behind clichéd gender roles and the traditional marriage plot”. #2Funny Story by Emily Henry

I’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about this book lately; apparently, it is all the rage! Funny Story is the latest installment from beloved author Emily Henry, also known for works like Beach Read, Book Lovers, and Happy Place. Released in April of 2024, Funny Story is a story about finding love in the most unexpected of places. When Daphne’s fiance leaves her for his childhood best friend, Petra, Daphne finds herself bonding with the last person on Earth she’d planned on having something in common with: Petra’s ex-fiance, Miles.

Miles and Daphne bond over the shared implosion of their relationships and find themselves leaning on one another as they attempt to get their feet back on solid ground. The duo could not be more opposite to one another; however, will they find that they have more in common than they think? And do opposites really attract? Get this great summer read and find out!

Christina Lauren is actually the combined pen name of authors Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, the writing duo behind The Paradise Problem. The pair are also the creative team behind several other popular romance books and have penned works such as The Unhoneymooners, Love & Other Words, and The Soulmate Equation. Their latest work, The Paradise Problem explores the popular romance trope of fake dating turned into real dating. Per the synopsis, The Paradise Problem tells of a “romance between the buttoned-up heir of a grocery chain and his free-spirited artist ex as they fake their relationship in order to receive a massive inheritance.” The book currently has an average rating of 4.17 stars on Goodreads.

#4 – This Summer Will Be Different by Carley Fortune

In This Summer Will Be Different, a woman begins dating a charming local while on vacation in Canada. However, she is in for the surprise of a lifetime when the man turns out to be her best friend’s younger brother. When their mutual connection uncovers the duo’s secret, will she be supportive of their pairing? Or will the duo end their relationship to spare her feelings?

Per Goodreads, “Lucy is a tourist vacationing at a beach house, while Felix is the local who shows her a very good time. The only problem? Lucy doesn’t know he’s her best friend’s younger brother. Lucy and Felix’s chemistry is unreal, but the list of reasons why they need to stay away from each other is long, and they vow to never repeat that electric night again.” This Summer Will Be Different has an average rating of 4.09 stars on Goodreads.

#5 – Summer Romance by Annabel Monaghan

Our last amazing summer read is called Summer Romance. In this book, a woman embarks on a whirlwind summer romance that ends up being the last thing she expected and has the potential to change her life forever. Throughout the book, she wrestles with a big question: Could this unexpected man be the one for her? When we meet our main character, she is going through a lot of personal turmoil: her mother just died, her husband left her, and her career is in upheaval. A book sure to keep readers on their toes, Summer Romance poses the question: What’s the harm in a little summer romance?
