Hunger Games Next Epic Story Embraces Readers in Early 2025

Warning: This article contains minor spoilers for the original Hunger Games trilogy published from 2008-2010.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a Young Adult dystopian novel from 2008 that rose in popularity with the release of its movie adaptation in 2012. Both the books and movies follow Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in a brutal fight to the death during an annual titular event called “The Hunger Games”.

In 2020, Suzanne Collins released a prequel to The Hunger Games called “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes”, which follows the primary antagonist of the original trilogy through his youth and coming of age years. Now, Hunger Games fans, can get excited once more because Suzanne Collins just announced that another prequel, set 40 years after The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, will be released in early 2025.

A New Book, An Old Era

Scholastic has sold over 100 million copies of The Hunger Games since its release in 2008. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes sold over 500 thousand copies in its first week of release in 2020. Sunrise on the Reaping by Suzanne Collins will begin on the morning of the reaping in the 50th annual Hunger Games – the day that Haymitch Abernathy was selected to compete.

If you’ve read the original trilogy of books or watched the movies, you’ll know that not only did Haymitch win, but he was devastated afterwards, developing alcoholism as a coping mechanism after his games. Despite his post-traumatic stress disorder, Haymitch went on to mentor Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark during their games, leading them to success.

Haymitch is a key member of “Team Girl on Fire” and fans of the books and movies adore him. Suzanne Collins is giving fans of The Hunger Games a chance to live through Haymitch’s experiences and understand more of where his surly attitude and bad coping mechanisms stem from.

Not only will we get a glimpse of Haymitch’s past, but we will see the extravagance and terror that comes with his games being set during the 2nd “Quarter Quell” – a special type of hunger games based on it being the 50th anniversary of their beginning.

Hunger Games Movie #6

Fans are surely wondering whether this book adaptation will lead to another movie. With the success of the first five movies, it is not surprising that Lionsgate announced that the adaptation for Sunrise on the Horizon is in the works and is expected to hit theatres in November 2026. It will be amazing to see young Haymitch compete in the games. Fans have been asking for his story from Collins since they got to know him more in Catching Fire.

In The Meantime

Between the original trilogy consisting of The Hunger Games, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay, in addition to The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and movie adaptations of all four, there is plenty of Hunger Games material to consume until March 18th, 2025 when Sunrise on the Horizon arrives.

You can pre-order Sunrise on the Horizon today wherever books are sold.
