The Bad Batch may have ended back in May, but Star Wars fans like myself didn’t need to wait long for the newest Star Wars show to premiere. The much-anticipated Star Wars: The Acolyte premiered on Tuesday night, and I wanted to give my thoughts on the first episode.
Spoiler Alert: With this being an episode overview, I do plan to talk about what happened during the episode. So, if you want to remain spoiler-free, then go watch The Acolyte first.
‘Star Wars’ Loves Its Action-Packed Openings
Before we’re even ten minutes into Star Wars: The Acolyte, we already see Jedi Master Indara, played by Matrix star Carrie-Ann Moss, lying dead on the upper floor of a bar. Mae, the seemingly Acolyte in question, seems to have some familiarity with her based on their interactions during the fight.
Overall, I thought this was a pretty impressive fight scene with some pretty good choreography. I liked how Indara didn’t immediately draw her lightsaber and we saw both her and Mae fight hand-to-hand while also using the force. It’s a type of fighting I’m glad to see Star Wars is exploring, especially in a series that features a heavy amount of force users.
Spacewalk This Way
After we leave the bar and the planet Ueda, we’re introduced to Osha, who looks exactly like the person who just murdered Master Indara. Osha and another crew member are working as Mekneks for the Trade Federation, which has them doing dangerous and illegal work like spacewalks.
It’s not too long until Mae’s action catches up with Osha as a Jedi Knight and former friend of Osha’s by the name of Yord Fandar arrives on the same ship she’s working on. Yord and his Padawan are investigating the murder of Master Indara, and a witness description points to Osha as the culprit.
Osha is arrested and put onto a prison transport ship, where other criminals aboard it are planning an escape. Osha is left on the ship after all the escape pods are taken and the ship crash lands on the planet Carlac.
Teaching At the Temple
The audience is then transported to Coruscant, where we’re introduced to Lee Jung-Jae’s character Jedi Master Sol. Lee Jung-Jae starred in Netflix‘s popular Squid Game and now also gets to add Jedi Master to his acting credits. It’s here where we’re also introduced to Vernestra Rwoh, a Mirialan Jedi Master who first debuted in the High Republic book A Test of Courage.
Vernestra informs Sol of Osha’s potential involvement in Indara’s murder, and it’s clear Sol still feels attached to his former Padawan. The prison break didn’t seem to go as intended as all the criminals were picked up and are in holding cells and it’s where the Jedi learn Osha crashed on Carlac.
Seeing Double
It’s on Carlac where we learn that Osha may not have murdered Indara as we’re introduced to Mae, Osha’s twin sister and who also seems to be The Acolyte. Mae and Ohsa aren’t the only pair of force-wielding twins as Luke and Leia were also twins and both could use the force.
Mae seems to reveal herself to Osha during a shared vision and it’s also on Carlac where Sol, Yord, and Sol’s new Padawn Jecki track Osha down. Osha says it wasn’t her and almost falls to her death before Sol saves her.
Rule Of Two
The show then cuts from Carlac and shows Mae walking along a rocky beach where she seems to meet up with her Sith Master. The master talks about how the Jedi share a dream and how an Acolyte can kill the dream. We see the master activate their red lightsaber and afterwards the credits roll.
Overall, I enjoyed the first episode. I think it’s awesome we’re finally seeing the High Republic in live action and that it’s a murder-mystery show to boot. I’m looking forward to watching episode 2 and doing a write-up afterward.
