The Super Mario Galaxy Movie 2nd Trailer Breakdown: Every Detail You Missed

โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ is the sequel to 2023โ€™s mega hit โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movie.โ€ Based on the beloved Mario video games, โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movieโ€ captured audiences by staying true to the feel of the games while telling Mario and Luigiโ€™s origin story. Now, โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ just released a new trailer, and it looks like it will be as much fun as the first movie.

The new trailer, which debuted during a special Nintendo Direct, opens with Mario and Luigi motorcycling through the desert. It turns out that the plumber brothers are fixing a pipe for a tribe of skeletons (in all the weirdness of the Mushroom Kingdom, why shouldnโ€™t they fix pipes for skeletons?). They use the Fire Flower powerups from the games to give themselves fire powers, which they use to light their way as they go exploring the ruins of an upside-down pyramid.

In the ruins, they run into something hiding under the rubble. Could it be a monster? No, itโ€™s instead a fan favorite character. It turns out to be Yoshi, the adorable green dinosaur who made his debut in Super Mario World, one of the launch titles for the Super Nintendo. Yoshiโ€™s popularity in Super Mario World led him to get his own game, Super Mario World 2: Yoshiโ€™s Island.

Yoshiโ€™s Island marked the debut of Yoshiโ€™s own series of games. Yoshi remains a beloved character in the Mario universe, with a new game, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, coming out later in 2026. Fans have been anticipating Yoshiโ€™s movie debut ever since โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movieโ€ had an end credit scene that hinted at Yoshi hatching out of one of the iconic Yoshi eggs with green polka dots. Judging by the new trailer, it looks like โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ will feature plenty of adorable Yoshi antics, including the little dinosaur stealing a candy apple from Toad.

What Else is in Store?

The movieโ€™s first trailer, which debuted in November, showed off the other fan favorites Bowser Jr. and Princess Rosalina. While Rosalina and Bowser Jr. didnโ€™t appear in the new trailer, it still provided plenty of treats for Mario fans besides Yoshi. Thereโ€™s a glimpse of Princess Peach fighting with Birdo, who debuted in the Japanese game Doki Doki Panic, which was reworked into the American version of Super Mario Bros. 2. Birdo has since become a regular Mario character.

There is also a glimpse of Luigi in a frog suit. Longtime Mario fans will recognize the frog suit from Super Mario Bros. 3, which could make Mario swim better in water levels. Just like โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movieโ€ before it, โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ seems to be digging deep into the Mario games for Easter eggs that the fans will love, including some Easter eggs that will appeal particularly to older fans.

In addition, thereโ€™s a shot of Yoshi trying to fight a realistic dinosaur, which works as a double reference. There were realistic dinosaurs in Super Mario Odyssey on the Nintendo Switch, but fans of the โ€œJurassic Worldโ€ movies can also enjoy a Chris Pratt nod. Pratt starred in โ€œJurassic World,โ€ and he also voices Mario in the movies, so he gets to face dinosaurs in both franchises.

โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ Looks Awesome!

Between the two trailers, โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ looks like it has plenty of goodies to offer Mario fans of all ages. โ€œThe Super Mario Bros. Movieโ€ was made with a lot of care and love for the games, and it looks like โ€œThe Super Mario Galaxy Movieโ€ will have the same amount of love and care put into it. The movie arrives in theaters on April 1st.
