Leonardo DiCaprio, “One Battle After Another”
“One Battle After Another” is a black comedy and action thriller. It was written, co-produced, and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. This film was also nominated for Best Picture. The movie is based on the 1990 novel “Vineland” by Thomas Pynchon. The story follows an ex-revolutionary who is forced back into his former tough lifestyle when he and his daughter are pursued by a corrupt military officer. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro (who is nominated for best supporting actor), Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and Chase Infiniti.
Ethan Hawke, “Blue Moon”
“Blue Moon” is a biographical comedy-drama movie directed by Richard Linklater and written by Robert Kaplow. The film is inspired by the letters of Elizabeth Weiland to Lorenz Hart. The plot follows the latter (Hart) as he reflects on himself on the opening night of Oklahoma!, a new musical by his former colleague Richard Rodgers. “Blue Moon” stars Best Actor Nominee Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale, and Andrew Scott.
Michael B. Jordan, “Sinners”
Sinners is a horror film that was produced, written, and directed by Ryan Coogler. It is set in 1932 in the Mississippi Delta. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as criminal twin brothers who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South, where they must contend with supernatural evil. That role, or those roles, were good for a best actor nomination. “Sinners” co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.
Wagner Moura, “The Secret Agent”
The Secret Agent is a political thriller movie that was both written and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho. Oscar best actor nominee Wagner Moura is an ex-professor caught in political turmoil associated with a Brazilian military dictatorship, attempting to flee persecution and resist an authoritarian regime. The supporting cast includes Carlos Francisco, Tânia Maria, Robério Diógenes, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Alice Carvalho, Hermila Guedes, Isabél Zuaa, and Udo Kier in his final film role. The film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
