“High Potential” Showrunner Reveals Morgan’s Romance and Feds Conflict in Season 2
In “High Potential,” Morgan Guillory is the chaotic (and very colorful) queen of the LAPD, and we can’t imagine it any other way. But if you thought solving murders while juggling three kids was stressful, “High Potential” Season 2 is about to throw a wrench into her personal life that makes crime scenes look… relaxing. Huh. Let’s take a peek at that flower delivery in episode “Under the Rug,” because it wasn’t just a nice romantic gesture – it actually was a warning shot.
The Return of the “Thomas Crown” Dynamic
Remember Rhys? The mysterious art consultant played by Aiden Turner who gave us serious “Thomas Crown Affair” energy? Well, he isn’t done with our girl. Showrunner Todd Harthan dropped some serious news about Rhys sending Morgan flowers, and now we’re reeling. This isn’t just a throwaway moment; it’s a deliberate seed planted by the writers.
Harthan noted that the writing team loves planting these narrative landmines that explode later. So, what does this mean for Morgan? It means Rhys is lingering in the background, a handsome, dangerous alternative to her current reality. Is he a real prospect for a relationship, or does he represent a life of thrill-seeking that she is trying to evolve past? The “will-they-won’t-they” energy here is kind of terrifying. Morgan is finally finding her footing with the police, so tossing a chaotic art world hunk into the mix is a likely recipe for disaster.
The Karadec Slow Burn Just Got More Complicated
While Rhys is playing the long game from a distance, we have to address the elephant in the precinct: Karadec. The chemistry between stars Kaitlin Olson and Daniel Sunjata is undeniable, but the show is smart enough not to rush it. In fact, Karadec recently did the most mature (and frustrating) thing possible – he pushed Morgan toward Tom (JD Pardo – who we hope to see way more of).
After their takeout-fueled all-nighter, which was more intimate than most actual dates – Karadec revealed he was once engaged but lost her to the job. By encouraging Morgan to explore things with Tom, he’s trying to protect her from his own workaholic fate. It hurts to watch because we want the relationship to happen immediately, but this “mutual revelation” is necessary. If they jumped into bed now, it would crash and burn. They need to earn it. But with Rhys possibly back in the picture, Karadec might realize he waited too long.
In “High Potential” Potentially the Feds are Coming for Morgan
If the messy love life wasn’t enough, Morgan is about to find herself on the FBI’s bad side. In “High Potential” S2, episode nine, a hitman sting goes wrong, and a federal agent ends up dead. Because our super smart protagonist can never just stay in her lane, she uncovers that the culprit is actually one of the Feds.
Harthan confirmed that by the end of this season, Morgan is going to be on “a bunch of different lists” – and not the good kind. This raises the stakes significantly. It’s one thing to annoy Karadec with wild (and often correct) theories; it’s another to have the Federal Bureau of Investigation breathing down your neck. This external pressure is likely going to force the team closer together, which brings us back to the squad dynamics.
Spotlight on the Supporting Squad
In S2 we are finally going to get some deep dives into the rest of the Major Crimes division. We’re promised a significant storyline for Detective Oz (Deniz Akdeniz) and a backstory unravelling for Daphne (Javicia Leslie). The Nick Wagner angle will be explored. Plus, Judy Reyes’ Soto is deservedly getting more screen time to shine.
Ultimately, “High Potential” is firing on all cylinders right now. It’s balancing the procedural elements with legitimate character growth and romance. It’s making sure that the entanglements feel earned rather than forced. Morgan might be a genius at solving crimes, but solving her own heart? That’s going to take a lot more than a 160 IQ.
