I was having a conversation with my 10-year-old cousin about anime, the latest releases, and my favorite characters; basically, we were just bonding. He asked me if I’d seen Chainsaw Man, and I said no. Long story short, my 10-year-old recommended Chainsaw Man to me. I’ve seen Chainsaw Man. I wasn’t impressed. What struck me was that my 10-year-old cousin had seen the anime. It had me thinking other 10-year-olds or even less might have seen this anime, too. It had me thinking: Do parents still think anime is just for children?
Anime is not only for children!
People say anime is a cartoon, but anime is not a cartoon. Well, technically, it is, but it is more than just a cartoon. Just the way an adult wouldn’t let a child watch Game of Thrones, children should not be exposed to certain anime. There are genres of anime so rated that even 18-year-olds seem too young to be watching them. And no, I don’t necessarily mean sexually explicit content, although that included. I’m talking especially about the violence, language, goriness, and even storyline; some anime is just the average adult movie. Popular anime like Jujutsu Kaisen, Demon Slayer, etc, are not children friendly. Keep in mind that Anime is just a representation of life in animated form.
Here are 5 Popular Anime Children Must Not Watch
Attack on Titan.
Attack on Titan is the most popular anime on the list. A hundred years of peace in the walls were ruined by the attack of the colossal and armored titans, threatening the humanity Eren and his friends knew. The shocking truth of how the Titans came about, what was beyond the walls, and the test of humanity makes Attack on Titan a classic in the anime world. Attack on Titan wove a story so complex, rich, and deep, with fight scenes that were bloody and full of carnage and not children-friendly. It is R-rated on Crunchyroll, the official streaming site.

Tokyo Ghoul
Kaneki Ken, a quiet university freshman, went on a bad date and became the main character in the fight between humans and ghouls. The animated scenes were gory, violent and full of blood. Tokyo ghoul is available on Hulu. The anime is also R-rated, so parents should look out for it.
Chainsaw Man
Another bloody and gruesome anime is Chainsaw Man. It follows the main character, Denji, a boy who is trying to pay off his late father’s debt. He stumbled upon a beast that changed his life forever. Denji is a boy who can remove chainsaws from parts of his body, and I don’t even need to stress how disturbing that is. No child should watch that, ever.
Akame Ga Kill!
Tatsumi, a fighter, sets out to the capital to make money. Due to unexpected events, he is taken in by the noble family but later finds out the noble family isn’t what they seem. He joins an assassin group called Night Raid, where he meets Akame, a swordswoman, and other powerful members on a quest to overthrow the Prime Minister. The title of the anime has Kill in it, I think that’s self explanatory.
Parasyte: The Maxim
There are parasites that inhabit the human body through the ear and take over the brain. The story talks about Shinichi and Migi, the parasite who in a failed attempt to inhabit his brain ended up in his right hand. These parasites kill humans at will and inhabit whoever they feel suitable. The anime storyline, the scenes, are definitely not for young audiences. Even the live adaptation of The Parasyte is rated 16+.
Conclusion
Parents need to pay attention to the genres of anime their children watch. If you can think it, there’s an anime about it. So, even though anime is not your cup of tea as an adult, take time to watch your children’s choice of anime with them, and pay attention to the parental guidance placed by the anime and streaming sites; restrictions are there for a reason. This can not only create a form of quality time for you but can help you monitor what your child watches. Who knows, you might end up enjoying it as well. You can watch Pokémon with your children.
