‘Spaceballs 2’s’ Production is Wrapping Up, and Lewis Pullman Happily Speaks About the Awesome and “Bizzare Simulation’

The Schwartz is finally awakening from a very FOUR-DECADE-long nap. Spaceballs 2 has wrapped up production with an interesting cast. Lewis Pullman, son of Long Star himself, stated that the experience of stepping into Mel Brooksโ€™ legendary satirical universe felt like stepping into an alternate reality.

Hollywood nepotism often sparks debate, but in THIS specific case, it feels fitting. Lewis Pullman, enjoying his surge of popularity from roles in “Lessons in Chemistry” and the forthcoming “Thunderbolts,” is officially joining the Spaceballs franchise, led by his father, Bill Pullman.

While speaking at the premiere of “The Testament of Ann Lee,” Lewis didn’t play it cool. He admitted in an article by People that the entire process of making the movie felt like a “bizarre simulation.” Pullman opened up about the surreal nature of the shoot and the joy of working alongside his father. “It was a dream come true,” Lewis said. “We just wrapped, andโ€ฆ every day was such a trip. I couldnโ€™t believe my luck.”

For years, fans have wondered if weโ€™d ever see Lone Star fly the Winnebago again. But for Lewis, the stakes were personal. He noted that he and his dad have wanted to work together “forever,” but the right project never materialized. To have that collaboration finally happen on the set of “Spaceballs 2″โ€”a follow-up to one of Bill Pullmanโ€™s most iconic rolesโ€”adds a layer of meta-comedy that even Mel Brooks would appreciate.

Lone Star and the Crew Are Back!

The most shocking part of this sequel isn’t just that itโ€™s happening, but who is showing up for it. Amazon MGM Studios has managed to pull off a miracle by reassembling the core team. Of course, Bill Pullman is back as Lone Star, and Daphne Zuniga returns as Princess Vespa. Mel Brooks is also returning, presumably to drop some wisdom as Yogurt (and hopefully sell us some more merch).

However, the biggest news regarding the cast is the return of Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. Moranis has been famously selective about roles since stepping away from the spotlight decades ago, so his involvement suggests the script must be something special. Alongside Lewis, the sequel will be seeing some new recruits, including Keke Palmer and Anthony Carrigan.

Josh Greenbaum is in the director’s chair, sitting next to writers of the “Spaceballs 2” script, Josh Gad, Benji Samit, and Dan Hernandez. The film has a mix of comedy legends and modern heavy hitters that feels promising. Oh, and yes, Gad will also be acting in the film because that man is just as funny as “Spaceballs.”

Satirizing The Era of “Sequelmania”

The original 1987 film skewered the original “Star Wars” trilogy. The sequel aims to poke fun at the current state of Hollywood: the endless churn of prequels, sequels, and cinematic universes. In a Deadline article, Mel Brooks teased the premise earlier this year with a crawl that perfectly summarized the exhaustion of modern fandom. The text mocked the existence of “a sequel to the prequel,” the complicated “Alien vs. Predator” timeline, and the fact that we have 36 MCU movies (and counting). We’re gonna go meta, folks!

Final Thoughts: Ready to Order? Yes! I’ll Have the Spaceballs 2, Please.

Youโ€™re going to have to wait a while because, even though production has wrapped up, “Spaceballs 2” isn’t slated to hit theaters until 2027. I know. I know. With all that hype, only to have your radar jammed sucks! The reasons are up in the…space: It could be the heavy visual effects required (space is hard to render, even for a comedy), or strategic scheduling by Amazon MGM Studios. Regardless, you will have plenty of time to watch and/or rewatch “Spaceballs” and feel the power of the Schwartz!
