Avatar: Fire and Ash has a strong opening night at the box office

Avatar: Fire and Ash Sets Box Office Ablaze On Opening Night

James Cameron has once again demonstrated his command over the box office, as Disney and 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: Fire and Ash” ignited the box office with an impressive $36.5 million on its opening day. The third installment in the groundbreaking sci-fi saga launched in 3,800 theaters across North America on Friday, setting the stage for a massive opening weekend.

Strong Projections and Franchise Legacy

Based on its powerful start, “Fire and Ash” is on track to earn between $90 million and $105 million domestically by the end of its first weekend. When combined with international grosses, the film’s global debut could soar as high as $365 million.

This opening places the third chapter in an interesting position within the franchise’s history. Its projected debut is tracking to surpass the original movie, which opened to $77 million in 2009, but will likely fall short of the previous sequel, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” which launched with $134 million domestically in 2022.

However, as industry watchers know, the opening weekend is only part of the story for a James Cameron film. Both previous movies demonstrated incredible staying power, legging out to become two of the highest-grossing films of all time. The first movie holds the all-time record with $2.92 billion worldwide, while “The Way of Water” also crossed the $2 billion mark. If “Fire and Ash” can maintain a similar trajectory, it would make “Avatar” the first blockbuster franchise in history to have three separate installments each grossing over $2 billion.

A Crowded Holiday Box Office

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” leads a competitive holiday weekend. In second place is Angel Studios’ animated feature “David,” which earned $9.6 million on Friday and is projected to finish the weekend with upwards of $25 million. Lionsgate’s R-rated thriller “The Housemaid” debuted in third place with an $8 million Friday opening, pacing for a $21 million weekend.

“The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants” took fourth place, while Disney’s own “Zootopia 2” rounded out the top five in its fourth week of release, continuing its successful run after recently crossing the $1 billion global benchmark.
