Young Sherlock: A Fresh Take on the Iconic Detective’s Origins
Young Sherlock, a new series from director and executive producer Guy Ritchie, is set to explore the formative years of the world’s most famous detective, and new details reveal an action-packed origin story that redefines the Sherlock Holmes canon. Titled Young Sherlock, the series stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a raw, unfiltered version of the iconic sleuth before he became the master of deduction known to millions.
Young Sherlock: A New Beginning for a Classic Character
Young Sherlock aims to answer the question: Why is Sherlock Holmes the way he is? The series begins with a 19-year-old Sherlock who finds himself disgraced and entangled in a murder mystery at Oxford University. This initial case catapults him into a globe-trotting conspiracy that will shape his future.
Showrunner Matthew Parkhill has emphasized a desire to respect Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s original work while exploring uncharted territory. His guiding principle is to never touch anything within the established canon, which begins with the first published story. “I felt that anything that happened before that, for me, it felt like a blank page,” Parkhill explained. This gives the creative team the freedom to craft an explosive, fresh narrative about Sherlock’s early days.
The Surprising Friendship of Sherlock and Moriarty
Perhaps the most intriguing twist revealed is the dynamic between Sherlock and his future arch-nemesis, James Moriarty (played by Dónal Finn). Instead of being adversaries from the start, the series will depict them as having an “incredible friendship” after meeting at Oxford.
This creative choice was inspired by classic cinematic duos like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The show will essentially serve as an origin story for both characters, exploring how their initial bond eventually sours into the legendary rivalry fans know so well. “If these two hadn’t met,” Parkhill teases, “Sherlock wouldn’t have become the Sherlock that we know, and Moriarty wouldn’t have become Moriarty.”
An Action-Packed and Stylized Approach
Helmed by Guy Ritchie, who previously directed the Robert Downey Jr.-led Sherlock Holmes films, the series promises a signature blend of style, wit, and action. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, who plays the titular role, has noted the daunting task of stepping into such a beloved character’s shoes but feels the show offers a unique and exciting perspective.
The series will also delve into Sherlock’s complex family dynamics, with Max Irons playing his brother Mycroft and Joseph Fiennes—Hero’s real-life uncle—cast as his father, Silas. For longtime fans, the show will be filled with Easter eggs, including the origin of the famous deerstalker cap and the beginnings of some of his most classic sayings. The game is afoot when Young Sherlock premieres on Prime Video.
