Zootopia 2 is dominating the international box office

Zootopia 2 Crosses $1 Billion At Global Box Office

Walt Disney Animation Studios has another massive hit on its paws. Zootopia 2 has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the global box office, achieving this staggering milestone in just 17 days. The sequel to the 2016 hit has roared past expectations, cementing its place as a cinematic juggernaut and continuing Disney’s recent streak of animated successes.

Zootopia 2 Breaking Records at Lightning Speed

Reaching the billion-dollar club is a rare feat, but Zootopia 2 did it with unprecedented speed. By crossing the threshold in just over two weeks, it has become the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion in the history of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), as well as the fastest PG-rated film to do so.

This achievement marks the second time a film has reached ten figures in 2025, following Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch. It also represents a significant victory for Walt Disney Animation Studios, which now boasts back-to-back billion-dollar releases following the massive success of Moana 2 last year. The studio now has five films in the billion-dollar club since 2013, a list that includes Frozen, Frozen 2, and the original Zootopia.

A Global Phenomenon

The film’s success is being driven by incredible performance in international markets. While the domestic box office has contributed a robust $232.7 million, the international take stands at a massive $753.4 million.

China has played a pivotal role in these numbers, where Zootopia 2 has shattered records. It is now the highest-grossing non-local animated film of all time in the country, earning $272 million in its opening alone. Currently standing as the second-highest MPA release ever in China—trailing only Avengers: Endgame—the film has resonated deeply with Chinese audiences, further proving the universal appeal of Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde.

Audiences embrace the Return to Zootopia

Critically and commercially, the film is a smash hit. With a “Certified Hot” audience score of 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore, word-of-mouth has been overwhelmingly positive. Jared Bush, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, expressed his gratitude for the fans’ response.

“Everyone at Disney Animation put their heart, soul and passion into this film to tell a story full of joy, imagination, and incredible thoughtfulness,” Bush said. “This milestone means the world to us, because more than anything, it means audiences are coming to theaters for a shared experience of watching this movie on the big screen.”

The excitement surrounding the sequel has also reignited interest in the broader franchise. Viewership for the original Zootopia film and the Zootopia+ series has surged on Disney+, accumulating more than 725 million hours of viewing time globally. As the franchise continues to expand, it is clear that the world of Zootopia is more popular than ever.
