Sam Worthington on What’s Next for ‘Avatar’ After ‘Fire and Ash’: “This Was Always the Final Battle”

If you enjoy aliens, naturalism, and military action, the “Avatar” film series is for you. This cinematic franchise comes to us from the legendary filmmaker and environmentalist, James Cameron. And its universe and lore grow with every entry, which is currently two. However, a third one, titled “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” is coming very soon.

The upcoming movie will continue the story set by its two predecessors. But the question is, what can we expect to occur after “Fire and Ash?” Well, leading actor Sam Worthington has some words on this acclaimed series’ future.

Director Announces Possible Departure

There’s much excitement surrounding the upcoming new “Avatar” movie, especially from fans. They’re also anxious about what’s coming afterwards since more films are confirmed. But it appears that James Cameron may have other plans regarding the franchise.

The renowned filmmaker announced that he’d probably be walking away from the series. But only if “Fire and Ash” fails to achieve a worthwhile profit. Each “Avatar” movie, according to Cameron, takes a “metric fuck-ton of money” to make. To make the work worthwhile, they must make at least twice as much. This statement rings especially true for “Fire and Ash” coming this month.

“Avatar” Actor Speaks Up

Sam Worthington, the lead actor of the “Avatar” franchise, weighed in on Cameron’s statement. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he remarked, “I think Jim’s right.” Worthington further elaborated, “You’re after a movie that your hope is that it connects.” And added, “It’s very nerve-racking when you hand a movie over.”

Worthington also admitted he felt “Fire and Ash” served as the saga’s ideal conclusion. He said, “To me, this was always the final battle, the final showdown.” Worthington added, “I also know that he’s (Cameron) kind of rounded off these two movies.” And finished by stating Cameron was giving “Fire and Ash” everything he possesses. Regardless, we’ll have to see how it performs to learn of the filmmaker’s final decision.

Final Thoughts

Like the countless followers of the franchise, I’m excited to see “Avatar: Fire and Ash.” The idea of Quaritch allying with a sketchy Na’vi offers many enticing prospects. And it’ll be intriguing to see what effect Neteyam’s death has on Jake and Neytiri. Plus, it’s speculated that Jake will regain his mantle of Toruk Makto. I know I’ll be rendered speechless with utter joy if that happens.

I, like Sam Worthington, understand why James Cameron would choose to leave the franchise. Still, it’d be a shame to lose Cameron because “Fire and Ash” fails financially. So I’m going to do my part and see the movie in theaters. I hope all you “Avatar” fans do the same once December 19 rolls by.
