Toho Announces New Godzilla Anime In The Works
For over 70 years, Godzilla terrorized the world and entertained the masses. He’s one of the most celebrated kaiju in history, complete with a gargantuan global fanbase. Only other giant monsters, like King Kong, Mothra, and Gamera, rival his popularity. He has appeared in numerous forms of media across time, including Japanese animation.
The King of Monsters has made a handful of anime appearances in various roles. But would you believe that he’s about to get more in the future? That’s right, the world-famous kaiju is returning in a brand-new anime series. Stick around if you want to learn more, especially if you’re a Godzilla fan.
Godzilla Across the Media
Godzilla first arose on the big screen in the 1954 science-fiction horror flick “Gojira.” The titular kaiju terrorized the people of a small, isolated island near Japan. Afterwards, he attacked Tokyo, reducing the metropolis to a ruined wasteland, like some unstoppable force. His reign of terror ended when a scientist used a horrific super weapon on him. The movie would be later dubbed and reworked into “Godzilla, King of the Monsters.”
From there, Godzilla appeared in more movies, often fighting other giant monsters. And it wasn’t long until he entered other Entertainment outlets like literature and video games. There’s even a song about him by the Blue Öyster Cult. Nevertheless, he continued to dominate visual media, appearing in cartoons and television shows.
The kaiju also emerged in anime, though his first prominent role wouldn’t be until 2017. It was in “Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters,” which jump-started Toho’s AniGoji movie trilogy. Years later, he’d return as a central antagonist in the series “Godzilla: Singular Point.” He hasn’t starred in any further anime since, but that’s about to change.
The New Upcoming Anime
Toho announced at Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2025 that they’re producing a new Godzilla anime. But there’s a unique twist regarding the renowned monster king in this upcoming series. Instead of starring the kaiju himself, it’ll focus on a boy wielding his power. How this situation occurred remains a mystery, as does most of the show.
What we know is Studio ORANGE, the crew behind “Singular Point,” is helping with production. And Toho released a preview of the protagonist in a dynamic shot. Still, we know nothing about the title, cast, overall premise, or the main character’s name. The best thing we can do is wait for an update that, hopefully, reveals more.
Final Thoughts
I cannot help but find this future Godzilla anime from Toho incredibly intriguing. The idea of a human wielding the kaiju’s power is something we’ve never seen yet. It’ll be fascinating to see if he’s the monster in human form. Or it’s a sort of spiritual resurrection, and the powers are an odd side effect.
I’m most interested to see what the entire kaiju situation is in this anime. The announcement and picture revealed nothing about Toho’s other monsters, such as Rodan or Mothra. It’s possible they still exist, or other people are using their powers. There are just so many questions we need the answers to. Here’s hoping Toho gives them to us in the near future.
