Storms, especially thunderstorms, are not ones to be messed with because they can become dangerous in a heartbeat if Mother Nature decides it to be. Anything life-threatening to yourself or others isn’t good and that usually happens because you might not be prepared as best as possible when a thunderstorm rolls around.
Being prepared is the best thing that can happen, but how do you prepare for a thunderstorm to keep safe? Lucky for you, I have a good part of the answer that can help you get started on safety and security.
Plan Safe for Your Thunderstorm
Having a family plan is a great way to stay safe when thunderstorms, especially dangerous ones, roll into the area.
A family plan is where you and those who live with you have a plan for all different scenarios that can happen during a storm. Such as evacuation.
You always want to have an idea or way to get out if you guys need to get out of the house because you’re in danger (like a fire). It’s also good because there are chances, even small ones, that you get separated from your family while the storm rolls in, and you guys need a meet-up point.
Planning for things like this even with the small chance of happening is a major help. Anything can happen with a storm because Mother Nature is unpredictable and it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
Light and Communication
Light and Communication are big things that many people don’t seem to realize when a storm is on the way.
Yes, people know that they need to pay attention to see if the power goes out or need to have communication with people on the outside in case of danger, but it’s always better to have things like flashlights and Walkie-Talkies (in case your phone dies) before a storm and always charges and ready to be on hand.
Candles and lighters are good to use in case flashlights are unavailable.
Thunderstorms can always get worse at random times, and rushing to the store for last-minute necessities never goes well because everyone gets the same thought process because they never have anything, and then the store runs out, leaving you stranded with nothing you need.
If you have everything you need to see and talk to others if your power and line goes out, make sure to check if they still work once in a while.
Keeping yourself and your family safe is always important enough to do the small things.
Stock Up
Being stocked on anything and everything that you need to keep safe from a thunderstorm is a major thing.
As the storm gets closer, people tend to rush out and get things such as water, food, batteries, and other necessities for the storm in case something happens or they are stuck inside for a long time.
Having your pantry stocked with food that doesn’t go bad easily is always a good thing to have.
There are times that when your power goes out, the food in your fridges may go bad, leaving a foul smell. So double-check before a storm to eat any food that might go bad quickly (such as fruit.)
Always make sure that you also have batteries and a portable charger. These are two things that can keep you safe. You might be wondering how, and the answer is your senses and your phone.
If you sit in darkness, you lose one of your 5 senses, making it harder to function and less safe if the storm happens dangerously harmful to your area. Keeping your phone charged is also important because, without a portable charger, your phone might be the only thing that could save someone if they are deeply injured during the storm.
Make sure that you also have a huge stock of blankets and hand fans in case the temperature is freezing or too hot because the power goes out, and you need to keep warm or cool down.
Babies are susceptible to body temperature changes and be harmed easily because of the change. Also, keep anything like formula or diapers ready for any toddler or baby that you have in your family.
It’s all about keeping them safe.
Being prepared for thunderstorms or any severe storm is the best way to stay injury-free and safe.
The small things might seem ridiculous but anything counts when it comes to the safety of others and yourself. Having plans, being stocked, and making sure you can use all your 5 senses is a great deal in being prepared for your thunderstorm.
So go make sure that you have everything you might need. The smaller things like food don’t need to be as worked up over, but it’s always good to make sure that you have everything you might need.
