Updated Ranking of Beloved Grinch Movies for 2025

He’s mean, green, hates the Christmas scene, and sweeps holiday joy away clean. It’s Dr. Seuss’s Grinch, and he’s making his way back into our homes this season. And his three immensely beloved films are coming with him.

But have you never wondered which of these flicks rank first, second, and third? We’ve scoured through countless sources to find a definitive answer to that question. So stick around and find out which Grinch feature takes which spot. Just don’t get upset if your favorite doesn’t take the place you’re hoping for.

3. The 2018 Remake from Illumination

The most recent adaptation, this animated Grinch film features Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular protagonist. He plots to ruin the Whos of Whoville’s favorite holiday and cast them into misery. And helping him are his dog Max, recruited reindeer Fred, and various homemade high-tech gadgets. At the same time, young Cindy Lou-Who has plans to get a wish from Santa.

Illumination’s version presents a bright, colorful take on Dr. Seuss’ classic tale. It comes with fun new music, a plethora of jokes, and expands Grinch’s backstory. Unfortunately, the movie lacks much of the source’s whimsy and diminishes the green curmudgeon’s presence. And it feels like it’s pandering to younger audiences, throwing away its predecessors’ edge. Regardless, it’s an ideal Christmas film that the entire family can enjoy around the holiday season.

2. Jim Carrey Recreates the Grinch

Ron Howard directed the 2000 live-action version with Jim Carrey taking center stage. Like the 2018 adaptation, the movie explores the reason behind the Grinch’s hatred of Christmas. And its B-plot focuses on Cindy Lou Who, who’s searching for the holiday’s meaning. Her quest leads to the Grinch and learning more about his shaky past with Whoville. In the end, he whisks away the Who’s decorations and gifts.

This remake brings a whimsical yet somewhat dark tone to the beloved holiday tale. It honestly feels like it caters to fans who grew up with the original. And it comes with a new song that became an instant classic for the season. However, Carrey’s iconic comedic acting is what propelled the movie into greatness. The only downside is that the film contains moments parents would likely deem inappropriate.

1. The Original Cartoon TV Special

No one should be surprised that the 1966 cartoon takes the Number One spot here. It’s the timeless tale of the mountain-dwelling, Christmas-hating hermit coming down to the peaceful Whoville. And stealing away everything of theirs related to the holiday in one night. The only time he’s not is when Cindy Lou Who almost catches him. Afterward, he finally understands the true meaning of Christmas and returns everything he stole.

This special came to life thanks to Chuck Jones’ animation style and Boris Karloff’s vocals. It’s a short and sweet feature that adheres to Seuss’ original idea. And gave us the revered “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. You could argue that its only con is the Grinch’s one-dimensional and petty villainy. Yet, it’s hard to criticize the cartoon that captured hearts and minds for decades.

Final Thoughts

I cannot help agreeing with this ranking of the three Grinch movies. Personally, I would’ve placed the 2000 adaptation at Number One since it’s such a masterpiece. But this definitive ranking came from various other lists, so I’m not going to argue. I will say that each feature is the best in its own unique way.

The movies have a way of bringing out the magic of Christmas. The same goes for those Walmart commercials popping up on television and YouTube nowadays. Still, I cannot wait to rewatch this trio of holiday staples throughout this month. I hope you all do the same, and once more, when Christmas arrives.
