“A Christmas Story” Cast Then And Now: Holiday Movie Stars
Hundreds upon hundreds of Christmas movies have come and gone throughout our lifetimes. And one of the most beloved and memorable is “A Christmas Story.” It’s the tale of a young boy working towards getting his ideal Christmas gift.
This film is high on people’s lists of holiday favorites to watch every year. It features iconic scenes, quotes, and performances from its talented stars. But has anyone ever wondered what the ensemble of “A Christmas Story” is doing nowadays? Well, we’re about to delve into that very question right now.
Fighting for the Perfect Present
“A Christmas Story” revolves around the holiday misadventures of a family from Indiana. But it mostly focuses on the oldest son, Ralph, who’s on a personal mission. He has his mind set on getting a Red Ryder BB gun for Christmas. The problem is his mother is adamant against it for fear of his safety. Regardless, he’s determined to get his coveted prize by any means necessary.
The movie also presents multiple B-plots showcasing the family’s dynamics and personalities. Ralph’s dad’s risque lamp and dealing with a local bully are the biggest ones. And the entire film is narrated by Jean Shepherd, portraying an older Ralph.
The “A Christmas Story” Stars Now
“A Christmas Story” was declared an instant masterpiece following its 1983 theatrical premiere. To this day, many people consider it a holiday favorite and staple worth revisiting every year. You can especially find it playing on TBS and TNT for 24 hours around Christmas. Its most important impact, however, is that it helped propel the careers of certain actors.
Peter Billingsley
Peter Billingsley stayed in Christmas movies following his breakout in “A Christmas Story.” He would even go on to appear on television shows until elevating to film director. Billingsley also helped produce various projects, including the 2012 Broadway adaptation of “A Christmas Story.”
Ian Petrella
Like Billingsley, Ian Petrella continued being a thespian, appearing on numerous shows. He eventually took a 15-year break, during which he studied improv in Los Angeles. Petrella now makes a living in animation and puppeteering, but can still act.
Scott Schwartz
Scott Schwartz went on to appear in more movies throughout the 80s. Later on, he shifted his career into the adult film industry and low-budget horror films. But nowadays, Schwartz is known for his unique line of celebrity-based trading cards.
R.D. Robb
Like his other “A Christmas Story” child co-stars, R.D. Robb kept acting. He appeared in television series and movies such as “ER” and “Matilda.” Robb later became the director for “Don’s Plum” and a producer of “Sirens” for Freeform.
Tedde Moore
Tedde Moore, who portrayed Ralph’s teacher Miss Shields, resumed her already-established performing career. She went on to reprise her role for the sequel “A Summer Story.” And continued starring in various projects until 2017, when she finally retired.
Melinda Dillon
Like Moore, Melinda Dillon was an established actor before appearing in “A Christmas Story.” And she kept to her career, appearing in movies and television until her 2007 retirement. Dillon sadly passed away some years ago at the age of 83.
Darren McGavin
Darren McGavin remained an entertainer following his renowned holiday role and landed numerous roles. He even received an Emmy nomination for his guest appearance on “Murphy Brown.” Like Dillon, he passed at 83 but from cardiovascular disease one year before her.
Final Thoughts
Without a doubt, “A Christmas Story” is one of the best Christmas movies ever. It just has this unexplained power to transport its grown-up viewers back in time. And help them relive the days when the holidays were still magical. The best part is that it does so without boring one-dimensional characters.
I’m also glad to know that the young cast members continued with their acting careers. Additionally, many of them went on to forge other careers instead of remaining one-trick ponies. Definitely a better use of their time than crashing out later as others did. And it’s all thanks to their time on the “A Christmas Story” set. I don’t know about you all, but I’m definitely watching it this year.
