“Back To School” Sweeney 2024 Another Public Service Announcement

“Back to School” is a 2024 book by Kevin Sweeney. “Back to School” gives many helpful insights for stroke recovery. Included in this barrage are several things. This book starts with the basics and expands to include podcasts, how Sweeney uses his house, and a chapter dedicated to what it is like to be a stroke survivor. There are many other interesting things in “Back to School.” In fact, “Back to School” has so many interesting things in it, it is worthwhile to review what is in “Back to School.” The book is useful to everyone because everyone either knows someone who has had a stroke or will. Do you think about someone you love having a stroke?

“Back to School” Elements

“Back to School” starts with that typology of strokes. The book starts at the beginning with the basics. Basic colors, shapes, and numbers are covered. This chapter is born of experience, so it is useful. This chapter also covers brain-training games, which are useful to everyone.

The second chapter talks about all of the various types of therapy that a stroke patient can have. The third chapter goes through all the rooms of Sweeney’s house and describes how Sweeney uses them for therapy. Not only do you get an overview of Sweeney’s house, but you also get the important lesson that stroke recovery patients must use their surroundings for their recovery. The fourth and fifth chapters describe various activities that could be of interest to stroke recovery patients. Important to the unemployed, there is a summary with screen captures of various job search engines.

Chapter five is fun. Not only does it reiterate brain training games, but it also covers many other games that stroke recovery patients play. This is useful for everyone because it contains lessons that apply to all people. Some examples include sports trivia and keeping score at baseball and basketball games. This is important because it is good to know that those who have had strokes can do many things, like volunteer to help with youth sporting events.

Chapter six is written for various constituencies, such as doctors, therapists, stroke patients, and their families. This is a particularly useful chapter, as the author writes from the perspective of a stroke patient. From experience. Sweeney says this chapter was added afterwards, but clearly it is of great value to many people.

The two appendices are worth mentioning. There is one in the Virginia driver’s manual. Often, people who have had strokes do not drive anymore but want to. This appendix shows what the person needs to study if they want to drive. It is useful that all the rules for driving are right there.

The second appendix covers the Virginia Standards of Learning. These federally mandated educational guidelines are for school children; however, they do a good job covering what stroke recovery patients will need to re-learn. This is useful because the Standards of Learning are progressive, like stroke recovery.

Finally, the about the author section is of interest to many people. Sweeney is an accomplished author. He wrote twelve scholarly articles. Back to School is the second book the author wrote. He has since written four more. The author does have a doctorate in political science.

Conclusion

The Cover of “Back to School” (and “Trapped,” for that matter) was designed by Sweeney’s 11-year-old son. What 11-year-olds have a United States copyright? This one does. This article is also a public service announcement because it is very likely you, or someone you love, will have a stroke at some point. If you get a copy of this book, you will know what to expect. That is useful because nobody told us what to expect, so it is all written down.
