Report: Kevin Costner In Talks To Play Bill Clinton In Upcoming United Nations Series
Kevin Costner may be trading his cowboy hat for a seat in the Oval Office. The Academy Award-winning actor is reportedly in negotiations to portray former U.S. President Bill Clinton in United, a new television series in development that will be produced in collaboration with the United Nations. The project also boasts Leonardo DiCaprio as an executive producer alongside Costner, bringing significant star power behind the camera.
The series is set to dramatize true stories of humanitarian efforts around the globe, with its first season focusing on the UN’s mission in East Timor in 1999. Chukwudi Iwuji (Peacemaker, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) is also reportedly being considered for the role of former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan.
Kevin Costner Entering A Story of International Crisis and Courage
United aims to shine a light on the sacrifices and bravery of UN humanitarian staff. The first season will explore the tumultuous events surrounding East Timor’s 1999 independence referendum. After decades of Indonesian occupation marked by widespread human rights abuses, the people of East Timor voted overwhelmingly for independence. The result triggered a violent backlash from pro-Indonesian militias, leading to a devastating crisis that killed at least 1,400 people and destroyed critical infrastructure.
President Clinton and his administration were instrumental in de-escalating the conflict, working with leaders from Australia, Portugal, and other UN-affiliated nations to restore order and guide East Timor toward becoming a sovereign nation in 2002. The series is expected to delve into the complex diplomatic efforts that unfolded behind the scenes.
Costner’s History with Historical Figures
This role would not be the first time Kevin Costner has stepped into the shoes of a real-life historical figure. He has a long and acclaimed history of portraying prominent personalities, including his roles as lawman Eliot Ness in The Untouchables and district attorney Jim Garrison in JFK. His recent focus has been on the Western epic Horizon: An American Saga and his starring role in the hit series Yellowstone. Taking on the role of a modern president like Bill Clinton would mark a compelling new chapter in his career.
The project is being written and directed by David Raymond (Night Hunter), who has been working with the UN’s Creative Community Outreach Initiative to unearth powerful true stories. With a production team that includes DiCaprio’s Appian Way, Onwards Studios, and Prime Focus DNEG, United is shaping up to be a high-profile series. Production is slated to begin next year in Atlanta and Spain, with Fifth Season handling distribution.
