5 Amazing Fantasy Series Ranked from Greatest to Least Great
While some fantasy series don’t take themselves seriously enough to be believable, others ground themselves into the public consciousness. As life hits you with uncertainty and despair, you can tune in every week to disappear into a magical world. Here are five of the greatest fantasy series of all time, ranked from greatest to least great.
5 Amazing Fantasy Series Ranked from Greatest to Least Great
1. Avatar: The Last Airbender
Who would have thought that a Nickelodeon show would end up being one of the greatest fantasy shows of all time? The show still has an active, dedicated adult fanbase twenty years after its debut. The show features some of the most stellar worldbuilding in any fantasy series, to the point where you seriously start wondering what kind of bender you would be if you lived in the Avatar universe. The characters are insanely memorable, especially the troubled fan favorite Prince Zuko.
2. Game of Thrones
You can debate about the final season all you want, but that doesn’t change the fact that this show changed the world of fantasy TV forever. It let the public know that fantasy can be unabashedly for adults and still be taken seriously. Fans would tune in and wonder if this would be the episode where their favorite character dies, which gave the show an unsettling feel, but it also helped fans conquer their fear of fictional death. Of course, Tyrion Lannister is forever iconic with his biting wit and laid-back attitude. So far, the prequel series, House of the Dragon, has lived up to its predecessor.
3. His Dark Materials
The 2007 movie of The Golden Compass was a box office disappointment and a failed attempt to start a franchise, but then the His Dark Materials fantasy series was able to adapt the Phillip Pullman books the right way. The visuals perfectly capture Pullman’s massive creativity with his multiple worlds, and the casting is brilliant, especially Lin-Manual Miranda as Lee Scorsby. One can’t help but wonder if HBO Max’s upcoming reboot of Harry Potter will be as good as this show.
4. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Does it take liberties with the source material? Yes, but it’s still an amazing show in its own right, and changing the source material in and of itself isn’t always a bad thing. We get to see a thriving Middle-Earth before the Rings of Power were forged. With gorgeous visuals, intriguing characters, and intense action scenes that would feel at home in the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings movies, this show is a worthy addition to the world of Middle-Earth. Here’s hoping the third season continues the show’s high quality.
5. Once Upon a Time
Who would have thought that Disney would make a live-action fantasy series that combines characters and elements from their most beloved animated movies? Well, they took a chance on the idea, and it worked brilliantly. We see new versions of various Disney characters such as Snow White, Maleficent, and Elsa, giving us a show that feels both fresh and familiar. I love it when storytellers put new spins on classic tales, and both this show and its spinoff, Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, do so exquisitely.
Will There Be a New Animated Avatar Show?
Ever since Avatar‘s sequel series, The Legend of Korra, ended, fans have wondered if we’ll ever revisit the animated world of Avatar. The live-action Netflix remake just isn’t the same as visiting the animated world again. Well, a new animated Avatar show is finally in the works. Titled Avatar: Seven Havens, it will follow the story of the next Avatar after Korra. If it has as much love put into it as the previous two Avatar shows, it will be among the best fantasy series ever.
