David Shangreaux Jr. Sentenced For Brutal Murder of 17 Year Old Teen in Bathroom
Justice has been served for Evie Maxey. David Shangreaux Jr. will be behind bars for the rest of his life for fatally killing a teenage girl in a bathroom nearly two years ago. He is 25 years old, and he committed the heinous crime on Nov. 30, 2023. In late 2023, authorities arrested Shangreaux Jr. after the brutal murder.
David Shangreaux Jr. Sentenced to Life in Prison

The 25-year-old was sentenced to life in prison on a Second Degree Murder charge on Tuesday in Hughes County Circuit Court. Following a week-long trial, Shangreaux Jr. was found guilty by a Hughes County jury in late April. Along with his life sentence, the killer was also sentenced without the possibility of parole. The victim of the fatal stabbing was identified as 17-year-old Evie Maxey.
Maxey, who was from Rapid City, was stabbed multiple times in the bathroom of the apartment that terrible night. The Pierre Police Department and South Dakota’s Division of Criminal Investigation both took charge and investigated the case. The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office and the Hughes County State’s Attorney’s Office conducted the prosecution of the case.
The South Dakota Attorney General’s Office said in a Facebook post, “David Shangreaux, Jr., of Pierre was found guilty Wednesday of Second Degree Murder in the November 2023 stabbing death of 17-year-old Evie Maxey. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation helped with the investigation, and the Attorney General’s Office prosecuted the case.”
On Nov. 30, 2023, per the initial affidavit of probable cause, “Pierre Police Patrol responded to 325 South Brule Street apartment 4, Pierre, Hughes County, South Dakota, for a report of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance by running between the apartment building and a vehicle in the parking lot being loud.” Responding officers encountered David Shangreaux Jr., and he denied causing a disturbance at the scene.
He said that it was most likely his wife, and apparently went to get his wife, but returned to the door alone. Police detained David Shangreaux Jr. when they saw his hands had blood on them. The officers found the victim, Maxey, unresponsive and riddled with bloody stab wounds in the apartment bathroom when they searched the apartment. She was pronounced dead by emergency medical services. According to witnesses, they heard loud banging noises, loud music, and a scream coming from the apartment where the crime took place.
Investigators found that David Shangeraux Jr. lived in the apartment with his girlfriend, identified as L.G. in court documents. Reportedly, L.G. said to authorities that she, Maxey, and her boyfriend were all in the apartment together, and that Shangreaux Jr. became inebriated and “began acting aggressively by threatening” Maxey with a knife. Allegedly, L.G. left the apartment, last seeing Maxey in the bathroom.
David Shangreaux Jr. confessed to stabbing Maxey in the bathroom due to a confrontation between the two, according to police. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley said, “Our hearts go out to Evie’s family. While this sentence cannot bring Evie back, justice has been served.”
Final Thoughts
Jackely said, “This was a horrendous crime that warranted this verdict.” Maxey was only 17 years old when she passed away. It’s really a sad case because she was still so young, and things will never be the same for her family. Things will never be the same for Shangreaux Jr.’s family either, as a loved one of theirs will be locked away for the rest of his life because of the terrible thing he did. Cases like this show that actions have consequences, and the harsh reality that there is little regard for human life.
