Chappell Roan is the poster child for every “no” putting you one step closer to a ‘yes.” Born Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, the young singer left her home state of Missouri, where she felt stifled and judged for being different, and moved to California. There she would eventually wander into a West Hollywood bar called the Abbey. That experience would change her life. Amstutz felt free to be herself for the first time. She turned that experience into the song “Pink Pony Club.”

After releasing her debut EP School Nights on Atlantic Records in 2017 under her stage name, Roan found her music career at a standstill. The release went nowhere, and her planned full-length studio album with the label was shelved. She released three more stand-alone singles that also went nowhere. In 2020, Atlantic dropped her from the label. Roan did not give up, though.

Undaunted, she moved back home and worked to save up money to return to L.A. When she did, Roan recorded a whole new set of songs and included two of the three stand-alone songs, “Pink Pony Club” and “California.” Roan named the album “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” and released it on Island Records in 2023. The album received positive reviews and garnered a cult following, but again, did not take off.

Finally, Good Luck

In 2024, Roan released the first single from her (still) upcoming second studio album, entitled “Good Luck, Babe!” The song became Roan’s long-awaited breakthrough, cracking the Top Five in seven countries. The success of the single sparked renewed interest in her 2023 album. Six songs off the album eventually found their way onto the charts in the U.S. and across the world. After her performance of it at the 2025 Grammy Awards, “Pink Pony Club” finally found commercial success, five years after its initial release. The song was certified platinum or multi-platinum in five countries and peaked at Number Four on the Billboard Hot 100.
