The 5 DC Heroes Struggling With the Darkest Personal Lives
DC Comics is one of the greatest names in comic books, alongside Marvel. Throughout the years, it introduced the world to countless memorable characters. Many of them appeared in various movies, television shows, animated series, and even video games.
Naturally, the most memorable DC characters are the justice-bound superheroes. Most live typical lives when not saving the world and stopping bad guys. But some actually remain surrounded by the darkness they combat every day. Care to learn about five heroes who possess the darkest private lives of all?
5. Red Hood
Jason Todd, the second Robin, was murdered by the psychotic Joker and then later resurrected. Unfortunately, he became consumed with trauma and feelings of abandonment afterward. Jason soon became Red Hood, a vigilante who often employed lethal force against all criminals. He even sought revenge against Joker and frequently clashed with Batman’s team. But when not donning the hood, Jason’s life is filled with pain and internal conflict.
4. Martian Manhunter
Despite being with the Justice League, J’onn J’onzz leads a lonely life. He’s the last Green Martian, having witnessed the destruction of his entire race. He also cannot return home and is forced to conceal himself amongst humans. And the worst part is that he must live with the losses he experienced. His isolation and internal torment are eternal, and there’s nothing he can do about it.
3. Raven
The daughter of a human and a demon, Raven has a truly dark life. Her mother raised her in a pacifist cult and suppressed her emotions. This upbringing resulted in her becoming emotionally isolated and possessing trust issues. She also constantly lives in fear of tapping into her demonic side. Luckily, she has her Titan teammates as her constant and one-of-a-kind support system.
2. Swamp Thing
Swamp Thing was once human before his mind merged with plants. He initially thought he could regain his former life, but he realized he couldn’t. The revelation led to him having an identity crisis and struggling against his new nature. And his relationship with the avatar of the Rot, Abby Arcane, is immensely complicated. Turmoil constantly bombards his guy on all sides, and it’s not stopping soon.
1. Batman
It’s no surprise that the Caped Crusader of Gotham City is on this list. Bruce Wayne lost his parents at a young age, prompting him to become Batman. That loss also caused him to isolate himself emotionally and keep others at arm’s length. He literally believes he cannot be happy and be the Dark Knight Gotham needs. And that is what makes his personal life the darkest ever in DC Comics.
Final Thoughts on This DC List
It doesn’t surprise me that these DC superheroes have such dark lives. They have incredibly morbid origins, so they’d have matching existences. And I cannot help feeling sorry that their turmoil constantly stays with them. It somewhat makes you want to give them each a hug or something.
Furthermore, it’s entirely predictable that Batman would take this list’s number-one spot. He’s like the poster child for dark origins and lives throughout superhero media. His parents died before his eyes, and now he cannot have emotional connections or happiness. You cannot get any darker or traumatizing than that, even if you tried. But maybe DC Comics will prove me wrong in a future comic book someday.
