Fans Stunned as Elton John Shows Off Glittering Body Casts From Hospital Bed
Elton John shocked fans last weekend when he posted a photo of himself in a hospital bed on Instagram. The photo was of the flamboyant singer in sparkly leg casts and a matching neck brace surrounded by cards and flowers. Fans who didn’t read the accompanying post feared the worst, but it turns out the whole scene was in promotion of John’s appearance in the new mockumentary sequel Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The post also appeared on the Spinal Tap Instagram account.
The Sequel 41 Years In The Making
Spinal Tap II picks up the story of the fictional heavy metal band 40 years after the original “documentary” and 15 years after the band has split up. It turns out that the band is still contractually obligated to play one more show. This second “documentary” follows the band’s members as they put aside their differences to come together one last time. It is a small miracle that the sequel even got made, as there had been years of lawsuits over royalties from the first movie and soundtrack.
The four creators of the original movie, having finally won the rights and proceeds that they sought, all returned for the sequel. Rob Reiner will again direct the film and play the documentarian Marty DiBergi. Christopher Guest will return as lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, Michael McKean as lead singer David St. Hubbins, and Harry Shearer as bassist Derek Smalls. Original cast members Paul Shaffer and Fran Drescher also reprise their roles.
The film features cameos from John, Paul McCartney, Garth Brooks, and Trisha Yearwood. All four contributed to the film’s soundtrack, The End Continues, as well. John features on a new song for the soundtrack entitled “(Listen to the) Flower People,” as well as a remake of the Spinal Tap classic “Stonehenge.” McCartney guests on the new song “Cups and Cakes.” Brooks and Yearwood worked on a remake of the band’s “Big Bottom.”

Above is the post, via John’s Instagram page, that garnered concern from many fans, celebrities included. Singer Charlie Puth commented, “YOU SCARED ME.” Actor Ryan Phillippe seconded that notion, “YOU SCARED ME TOO!” Model Linda Evangelista commented, “🙏🏻 Sending love ♥️.” John, 78, has dealt with very real health issues in recent years, including a severe eye infection that caused the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer some permanent damage to his right eye. Luckily, in this case, all was well.
Spinal Tap II Debut
Spinal Tap II: The End Continues debuted in theaters on September 12. The movie grossed approximately $1.6 million during its opening weekend. Rotten Tomatoes rated the film 66% fresh, but listed audience reactions at 91% positive on their Popcornmeter.
