David Bowie’s Hidden Final Project Mysteriously Comes to Light
David Bowie’s hidden final project has surprisingly been revealed. Set in 18th-century London, The Spectator musical will be featured in the new David Bowie Centre, at theV&A East Storehousein Hackney Wick, London. Opening on September 13, 2025, the musical remained unknown even to Bowie’s closest collaborators. This was until it’s discovery in 2016. Locked in his New York study, the detailed ideas for the project were found written on post-it notes, and pinned to the walls.
The exhibition will showcase these original notes, along with other items from his vast archive. These items will include handwritten lyrics, costumes, and instruments. The Spectator was inspired by the era’s vibrant art, satire, and criminal underworld, with characters like the thief “Honest” Jack Sheppard and the “thief-taker general” Jonathan Wild. These characters were featured in Bowie’s notes. The project reflects Bowie’s lifelong ambition to write for theatre.
David Bowie’s Dream Has Been Realized
He expressed this dream in a 2002 interview with BBC. The V&A East Storehouse will also offer an “Order An Object” service. This service will allow fans to request specific items from the archive for viewing. The exhibition will also display at least 200 items from the 90,000-object collection. This collection aims to inspire future creators by highlighting Bowie’s creative processes. It will also highlight his ability to draw connections between past and present cultural moments.

David Bowie’s Legacy Lives On
Bowie rose to international superstardom in 1972, with the introduction of Ziggy Stardust.
