Charlie Kirk, 31, Shot and Killed At a Utah Valley University Event
Conservative and Trump ally Charlie Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday during what should have been a routine campus speaking engagement. The incident has left the political world reeling and is sure to inflame the political polarization in this country. In this increasingly divided climate, the incident raises serious questions about the safety of public figures. The tragic sequence took place this afternoon at Utah Valley University.
Charlie Kirk Shot and Killed At Campus Event
Charlie Kirk was midway through a student Q&A session hosted by Turning Point USA when tragedy struck. Eyewitnesses describe a scene that transformed from engaged political discourse to absolute chaos in mere seconds. Around 1:20 p.m., approximately 20 minutes into the speaker’s presentation, a single gunshot pierced the air. The political polarization in this country has spilled into many areas of life, with entertainment being a notable example.
According to Desert News reporters who witnessed the scene firsthand, the shot came after a student had asked the conservative activist about transgender shooters. Emma Pitts, one of the reporters present, told CNN: “You see Charlie go limp, his neck kind of turned, and we saw blood immediately.” The scene was haunting – Charlie Kirk recoiled in his seat after being struck near the neck area.
In attendance was former US Rep. Jason Chaffetz, A Utah Republican. He told Fox News he was at the event with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law. He said that Kirk “came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd,” and then took questions before he was shot and killed. Chaffetz added, “I was watching Charlie. I can’t say that I saw blood. I can’t say that I saw him get hit, but I did see him fall immediately backwards into his left.”
Public Reactions to The Shooting
The Guardian reported that Eva Terry, another reporter at the scene, described the pre-shooting atmosphere as “really happy, excited,” with students eager to engage with Charlie Kirk. That enthusiasm turned into terror in an instant. “Before Charlie Kirk could pick up the mic again, that’s when the shot happened,” Terry recalled. The shooting has brought in unity from figures of both sides, condemning the attack.
Shortly before the shots rang out, the Trump ally tweeted, “WE. ARE. SO. BACK. Utah Valley University is FIRED UP and READY for the first stop back on the American Comeback Tour.” Donald Trump Jr. posted on X: “Charlie Kirk is one of the finest humans I know. Everyone, please lift him and his family up in prayer.” California Gov. Gavin Newsom quickly condemned the attack on his X account: The attack on Charlie Kirk is disgusting, vile, and reprehensible. In the United States of America, we must reject political violence in EVERY form.”
President Donald Trump announced his ally’s death on his Truth Social Platform: “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk is dead.” Kirk was only 31 years old and married his wife Erike Frantzve in 2021, with whom he shared two young children. Kirk co-founded Turning Point USA in 2012 with conservative activist Bill Montgomery. He went on to become a well-known media personality and best-selling author.
Final Thoughts
It is a shame that what should have been a routine speaking engagement turned into a horrible tragedy. Whoever committed this awful crime just made the already bad political polarization in this country a lot worse. This terrible act of murder will surely radicalize some (not all) individuals on the conservative side. Our thoughts and prayers must be with Kirk’s wife, children, and family. The killer has not yet been arrested and is still at large.
