Swamp Thing #88

Rick Veitch Reacts to Swamp Thing #88 Gossip With ‘I Know Nothing’ Meme

Throughout the decades, DC Comics has given the world millions of memorable characters. Its roster includes Batman, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Lex Luthor, Green Lantern, Alfred Pennyworth, and Superman. And one of the most recognizable characters the company created is Swamp Thing. He’s the Avatar of the Green and a protector of Nature.

He first appeared in 1971 and has been a prominent character since. This plant-based superhero has starred in cartoons, films, television series, and, of course, comic books. The one time he didn’t emerge involved the cancellation of a particular comic. However, would it surprise you to learn that DC Comics might release it?

The Guardian of the Green

Swamp Thing’s origins begin with Alec Holland, a brilliant scientist working on a revolutionary breakthrough. Alec’s lab exploded without warning one day, leaving him with potentially fatal wounds. He hurried into a nearby swamp in the desperate hope of saving himself. Unfortunately, he returned as a plant creature instead of the man he once was. Now, gifted with the power to control flora, fights to protect the ecosystem.

Swamp Thing’s environmental-saving escapades have led to him tangling with numerous dangerous foes. His gallery of rogues includes The Parliament of Trees, Anton Arcane, and the Floronic Man. Of course, he sometimes joins forces with other renowned DC heroes such as John Constantine. He’s even part of a small mystical threat-handling team called Justice League Dark.

Lost Swamp Thing Comic Possibly Coming

Swamp Thing made his grand debut in the 1971 comic, House of Secrets #92. Since then, he has had many adventures in other comic series, including his own. There’s even a tale where aliens send him back in time, and he meets Jesus. This issue, Swamp Thing #88, sadly never saw the light of day. DC Comics cancelled it due to concerns over the use of religious imagery and figures.

Despite that decision, rumors about this banned comic getting released have been circulating. The comic’s writer, Rick Veitch, addressed these speculations over on Facebook. But instead of using words, he replied with a somewhat humorous meme. It’s a photo of Sergeant Schultz yelling his famous catchphrase, “I know nothing!”

Sergeant Schultz is from Hogan’s Heroes, a renowned comedy sitcom set in World War II. He often uttered his phrase to keep himself out of trouble. Veitch, on the other hand, is probably communicating that he knows nothing about DC’s plans. Or he knows something and is trying to divert people’s attention from the truth. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait for a future update to see what his meme meant.

Final Thoughts

I’m not a fan of Swamp Thing, but I don’t hate him. He’s honestly a really cool DC Comics character with an intriguing dark backstory. My exposure to him throughout my life has been very minimal. Still, he’s an iconic superhero character who deserves his acclaim and following. I wouldn’t mind seeing more of him in a future film or series.

As for the gossip surrounding Swamp Thing #88, it’s certainly intriguing. It would be cool if this banned comic issue got its second chance. I mean, I somewhat understand why DC Comics felt the need to shelf it. Still, it’s time to release it and let the people experience something potentially incredible.
