‘Boston Blue’: Where the ‘Blue Bloods’ Characters Are Before the Spinoff Airs
Blue Bloods fans were both surprised and disappointed when the series was canceled last year. Boston Blue, starring Donnie Wahlberg, is a highly anticipated spinoff of the show. After Blue Bloods ran on CBS for 14 successful seasons, it was a shocking decision by TV execs to end its run, so Boston Blue is looking like it will fill that void – and possibly more!
Blue Bloods to Boston Blue: From New York to Boston
Yep, you guessed it – the majority of the details regarding Boston Blue is being kept under wraps. And who can blame them? They want to keep as much as possible of it quiet; a secret until its premiere.
Something that star Donnie Wahlberg did say on a recent podcast appearance of Billy & Lisa In The Morning was that the first episode of the series will “blow people’s minds.” He went on to say:
I think people are going to be like, ‘Oh, my God,’ like, there’s some twists and turns in the first episode, and then we’re going to continue that.
What a teaser! Besides that small clue, Donnie said that Boston Blue will honor the OG series Blue Bloods.
What Blue Bloods Characters Will We See in Boston Blue?
At this time, details remain scant, but it looks as though Danny (Donnie Wahlberg) will continue to remain in contact with his dad, Frank Reagan, his brother, Jamie, and his attorney sister, Erin. He’ll probably call on Erin for a little legal advice now and then.
From the close familial ties exhibited in Blue Bloods, it’s highly likely that we will see characters visiting occasionally, traveling up to Boston. Remember, the cities aren’t so far apart! Plus, who wouldn’t want to visit and savor some Boston clam chowder? (Chowdah!)
The Reagan Family: Where We Left Off
Okay, Bluewatchers, let’s take a look at what each member of the Reagan family was when the series ended last autumn.
Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck)
Commissioner Reagan had just received the keys to the city in the last episode of Blue Bloods. Although it is not confirmed if he will guest star in Boston Blue, Selleck is currently working on production of a new installment of the Jesse Stone series.
Jamie Reagan (Will Estes)
The youngest brother, Jamie, lawyer turned cop (remember?), will likely come visit his big brother in Boston Blue. During the very last part of the finale of the Blue Bloods series, he and his wife, Eddie made a big announcement.
Eddie Janko-Reagan (Vanessa Ray)
On the last episode of Blue Bloods, Eddie and Jamie proudly announced her pregnancy by bringing a highchair to the family dinner table. Oh baby! So it remains to be seen if she will guest star in a few Boston Blue episodes
Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan)
Now we get to Danny’s hard-nosed attorney sister. If you recall, she had secretly re-married her ex-husband, played by Peter Hermann. (Fun fact – he’s married to Mariska Hargitay IRL!) Moynahan is slated to direct an episode.
Henry Reagan (Len Cariou)
The wisest of the bunch, always giving out sage advice; we last saw Henry heading to the family dinner table. We certainly hope he comes to Boston Blue, because you know, Danny will inevitably need advice, and maybe even insight on his love life!
Joe Hill (Will Hochman)
A newer addition to Blue Bloods, Hochman played Joe, Danny’s nephew. By the end of the series, Joe and Danny were tight, so it would make sense for him to come to Boston for a visit. Fuel up your Chevelle, Joe. It’s not that long of a ride!
Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez)
Now we get to Danny’s old detective partner, Maria. By the end of Blue Bloods, Danny had asked Maria out for pizza. Not so unusual, considering they’ve been partners for a long time, but this pizza felt more personal than professional.
Boston Blue Will Involve Another Legal Family
From the Reagan family to the Peters family – Detective Danny moves up to Boston to be partnered with Lena Peters, who also comes from a prominent Boston law-enforcement family. Lena will be played by Sonequa Martin-Green.
Additionally starring in Boston Blue is Ernie Hudson, Gloria Reuben (of ER), Maggie Lawson, of Psych fame, and Mika Amonsen. Mika will be taking over the role of Sean, Danny’s son. From all accounts, it looks as though Sean wants to follow in his father‘s footsteps and be a police officer. We can’t wait to see what family drama this development will bring.
A Few Final Thoughts
Although Boston Blue may not be able to replicate Blue Bloods’ Sunday night family dinners, we definitely hope to see lots of family elements. The Peters-Silver family might fill that gap for us. One thing is for sure: we will have lots of character development, intriguing cases, and intense action – all set against the red brick backdrop of the beautiful and historic Boston skyline.
